The child’s father, William Becker, said his 10-year-old son has experienced a downward spiral since the incident, which has kept him out of the classroom for more than a year.

“It's just real hard for him. He just doesn't know what to do with himself any more,” Becker said.

Vincent Brown can't speak for himself, he is considered non-verbal.

“His routine and structure [are] completely broken and for autistic children, it's just not a good thing,” Becker said.

Vincent was in fourth grade when he was allegedly attacked on his way to Variety School in November of 2022.

Variety School (KLAS)

Officers with the Clark County School District Police Department arrested Dorys Tovar in December of that year on one count of child abuse.

According to court documents, Tovar struck Brown in the face, body, limbs, torso, and extremities.

“He rages out, he's been out of school for a year now,” Becker said. “He had got the allegations of abuse backed up by video and a couple of statements by other people.”

Online court records show Tovar’s case was dismissed in Las Vegas Justice Court in October of 2023, and prosecutors are now pursuing a grand jury indictment.

“He's a beautiful child, he's smart. Just a good kid. He just needs the guidance and help,” Beker said.

Vincent Brown (KLAS)

Brown’s family is against him riding a school bus or going back to Variety. Becker said he wants his son to go to a school near their home.

His parents hope that a federal lawsuit they filed against the Clark County School District not only helps Brown but brings changes.

“CCSD should probably have a better screening process for people to deal with these types of children because there are so many autistic children out there,” Becker said.

CCSD has a policy of not commenting on pending litigation.

Here is a link to a GoFundMe Brown’s family started to raise money for a private tutor.

“I remember I picked up my dog and rolled over my girlfriend and got shot in my leg and it shattered my femur,” he said.

Kylee Au Young, 21, and Cristobal Omar Perez, 31, were arrested by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Thursday in connection with the shooting of an encampment on December 1, 2023. The duo were scheduled to appear in court Friday, but only one arrived.

Au Young made her initial appearance in court today while Perez, according to court officials, was not transported, a reason was not provided.

Hearing Master Daniel Westmeyer accepted the request for continuance from Perez and Au Young; they both are being held without bail.

Perez faces charges of open murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit murder among others. Au Young is charged with two counts of open murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The owner at the am/pm at Charleston Boulevard and North Honolulu Street said he tries to help those from the encampment that frequent his store. Adolph said that if anyone can help him pay for medication for his dog, a portable charger for his phone, clothes, and food would go a long way.

“It’s been really hard,” Adolph said. “It can’t go back to normal because this is something that changes people’s lives forever.”

Ex-teacher keeps license, avoids jail time for inappropriately touching students https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/ex-teacher-keeps-license-avoids-jail-time-for-inappropriately-touching-students/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 04:05:12 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712523 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - A former Clark County School District teacher sentenced for inappropriate behavior continues to hold a teaching license and doesn't have to register as a sex offender, according to records.

Bryan Brady spent more than a decade at CCSD, but court documents state school police found he touched several female students and even told one - he'd help her get a better grade.

Brady was sentenced to 12 months of probation Aug. of 2023, avoiding jail and sparking a lawsuit from his victims criticizing him and the district.

8 News Now obtained video of two of his court hearings through a public records request.

“With the court's permission today, Mr. Brady is going to be pleading guilty by way of Alford to unlawful contact with a minor, gross misdemeanor,” his attorney Rick Tanasi said in front of District Court Judge Tara Clark Newberry on May 2, 2023, during his plea hearing.

An Alford plea means that Brady believes there's a likelihood of being convicted but doesn't admit to committing the crime.

Brady was a teacher at John C. Fremont Middle School at the time of his arrest in October of 2022 on five counts of unlawful contact with students. He was first hired at CCSD in 2012, according to the district.

A Clark County School District Police Department report shows three students in November of 2021 reported Brady to administrators for touching them.

In one incident, Brady grabbed a girl's thigh and asked her "if she wanted to raise her grade."

“Do you understand this is a conditioned plea, whereby if the court refuses to accept the terms of the negotiation either side may withdraw the negotiation?” Judge Newberry asked.

Bryan Brady responded, “Yes, your honor.”

But the court didn't refuse his plea in May.

A few months later on Aug. 8, 2023, he received a suspended sentence of 364 days in jail, and one year of probation, which required he stay a thousand feet away from anywhere there is a child, including a school.

“There's an agreement between you and the state, that if you successfully complete probation, receive an honorable discharge, and you comply with all of the conditions that are stated on pages 1 and 2, items 1 through 5, only then would you be eligible to withdraw your plea of guilt to a gross misdemeanor, unlawful contact with a child, and receive the benefit of a dropped down to a dismissal,” Judge Newberry told Brady in court.

8 News Now tried obtaining a copy of the video and transcript of Brady’s August sentencing, but we were denied due to the court sealing the records.

Brady still has an active teaching license listed on the Nevada Department of Education's website.

The attorney who filed a civil lawsuit in October of last year on behalf of the victims declined to comment.

Brady hung up when 8 News Now reporter Joshua Peguero called him.

8 News Now reached out to the Clark County District Attorney's office on Friday afternoon inquiring about Brady’s plea but did not get a response.

The Nevada Department of Education has not yet responded to questions regarding Brady’s active teaching license.

According to CCSD, Brady hasn't worked for the district since the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

Forest Service pile burning planned in Spring Mountains starting in January https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/forest-service-pile-burning-planned-in-spring-mountains-starting-in-january/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 02:42:46 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712533 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Fire crews will begin burning piles of forest debris beginning this month in the Spring Mountains, including areas near the top of Lee Canyon Road (SR156), along Deer Creek Road (SR158) and two spots near the top of Kyle Canyon Road (SR157).

"Pile burning" operations could produce smoke, and officials want to avoid alarming the public. See the full list of sites below.

Burning branches, downed trees and debris that has been collected into piles around the recreation area has benefits that include reducing fuel for wildfires and controlling insect and disease outbreaks in forests. The burns also recycle nutrients that enrich soils and improve wildlife habitat.

The timing of the burns will depend on several factors, including humidity levels, wind conditions, temperature and fuel moisture, according to a news release. "Burns only occur on days when weather conditions exist for smoke dispersal," according to officials.

Updates are available from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Facebook page or on X (formerly Twitter) at https://twitter.com/HumboldtToiyabe.

"Please do not call 911 about burning in the areas listed below," according to a news release. Local fire departments are aware of the planned pile burning.

  • Potosi Pass
    • Roughly 100 acres of pile burning from a hazardous fuel reduction project is planned in the Mt. Potosi area near mile marker 20 on Nevada State Route 160, one mile south of Mountain Springs.
  • Coal Springs/Lovell Summit
    • Roughly 150 acres of pile burning for a habitat improvement project is planned along the Forest Service Road 45536 (Lovell Summit Road) between Lovell and Trout canyons.
  • McFarland Canyon
    • About 200 acres of pile burning as part of a habitat improvement project is planned near McFarland Canyon approximately one mile to the east of Cold Creek.
  • Lee Canyon Guard Station
    • Roughly two acres of pile burning from a hazardous fuel reduction project is planned along the north side of Lee Canyon Road near mile marker one.
  • McWilliams Campground
    • Nearly 25 acres of pile burning from the result of Tropical Storm Hilary is planned in Lee Canyon at the McFarland Campground. The planned area is to the west of the beginning (mile marker 0) of Lee Canyon Road.
  • Camp Stimson
    • About 20 acres of pile burning for a hazardous fuel reduction project is planned near mile marker six on Deer Creek Highway, a half mile northwest of Deer Creek Picnic Area.
  • Kyle Canyon Administrative Site
    • Roughly three acres of pile burning from the result of Tropical Storm Hilary is planned in Kyle Canyon near the Forest Service Kyle Administrative Site at approximately mile marker two on Kyle Canyon Road.
  • Cathedral Rock Picnic Area
    • Around nine acres of pile burning is planned in the picnic area near mile start of Kyle Canyon Road, one-tenth of a mile southeast of the Kyle Canyon Cathedral Rock subdivision.

UNLV's Beam Hall to remain closed through spring semester https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/unlvs-beam-hall-to-remain-closed-through-spring-semester/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 02:31:29 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712529 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - UNLV's Beam Hall is expected to remain closed to the public for the spring semester following the campus shooting in December, according to the university's president Keith Whitfield.

The announcement was made on Friday as part of an update on the university's website.

Students, faculty, and staff will return to campus for the spring semester on Jan. 16 more than a month after the shooting.

On Dec. 6, 2023, Professor Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, of Henderson; Associate Professor Naoko Takemaru, 69, of Las Vegas, 69; and Assistant Professor Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, of Las Vegas, were killed during the shooting.

"Even though we continue to make progress on building repairs in Beam Hall, we also understand the intense emotional trauma that exists for our colleagues who work in the building, and for students still recovering from the impact of the Dec. 6 tragedy and its aftermath. So in consultation with faculty, staff, and leadership in the Lee Business School and College of Liberal Arts, and with our Facilities and Business Affairs teams, Provost Heavey and I have made the decision to keep Beam Hall closed to the public for the spring semester," Whitfield stated online.

All classes previously scheduled for Beam Hall this spring have been reassigned to other classrooms on campus or to remote instruction.

Faculty and staff will have the option of working in their offices, working remotely, or using hoteling spaces in other buildings but Beam Hall will remain locked and accessible only to occupants and their personal guests for the semester.  Other services and programming typically in Beam Hall will be relocated for the semester.

Housing crisis, rising rents fuel need for assistance programs https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/housing-crisis-rising-rents-fuel-need-for-assistance-programs/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 02:06:00 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712447 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Potential homebuyers in Nevada and nationwide are feeling the pinch with rising home costs since 2022.

Several federal, state and local resource groups gathered at the Desert Breeze Community Center Friday morning to highlight the new and existing programs to help. The resources ranged from financial and housing to food security and utility bill assistance.

The housing forum was organized largely by Congresswoman Susie Lee, who began the address by saying the state is in a housing crisis and it is all hands on deck to help.

"We have an 84,000-unit deficit that literally means we have to build more," Lee said.

One group building more is Nevada HAND, a nonprofit, affordable housing developer.

Marissa Shoop of Nevada HAND. (KLAS)

Marissa Shoop, the director of resident services, highlighted an upcoming senior housing project, and others.

"Nevada HAND is proud to have about 2,000 units in the pipeline to serve Southern Nevada," Shoop said. "But we know it is a drop in the bucket of the need Southern Nevada has."

The National Low-income Housing Coalition confirms a rental shortage across Nevada. Many households spend more than half their income on housing.

Clark County's most-used social service programs include the Fixed Income CHAP for rental and utility help.

Several federal, state, and local agencies gathered Friday morning to discuss the housing crisis and solutions offered for Southern Nevadans. (Lauren Negrete/KLAS)

Senior Family Service Specialist Alyssa Antos explained the program is catered to households that are on a fixed income, have a rent increase and are having a hard time making rent, and are facing eviction.

Their Eviction Prevention program is also frequently used, which can help pay past due and future rent for up to a year.

As for why these are needed, Antos points to trends like post-pandemic hardships and rising rents.

"Especially since COVID, rent has increased, and people can't keep up with the demand," Antos said.

Seniors can take advantage of United Way of Southern Nevada's Project REACH which will pay one utility bill once a year up to $300.

The Nevada homeowner assistance fund has loan and unemployment mortgage assistance programs that can help families up to $65,000.

And The Just One Project hit the podium to speak on their wide offering. Programs include food, housing and youth services.

These and other agencies are stepping up to answer the call.

‘That’s how events go in Las Vegas,’ which businesses won, lost during F1 Las Vegas weekend? https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/thats-how-events-go-in-las-vegas-which-businesses-won-lost-during-f1-las-vegas-weekend/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 02:02:28 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712471 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - As Formula One has come and gone, some Las Vegas Valley businesses say they are still recovering from a weekend of losses while others report the race as their highest-grossing weekend ever.

Simran Singh has a constant reminder of the half-year construction project, which converted nearly four miles of public road into a world-class racetrack, outside her front door. Her husband and her own Las Vegas Souvenirs & Gifts, located directly next to a 750-foot-long temporary vehicular bridge built on Flamingo Road over Koval Lane that is still there.

“They’re supposed to take it down because look how slow it is,” Singh said outside her store Friday morning, referencing a nearly empty storefront as cars flew over the bridge and past her business. “It wasn’t easy. We didn’t get any business at all.”

The temporary vehicle bridge on Flamingo Road over Koval Lane continues to be the focus of a undergo a traffic study by Clark County Public Works. (KLAS)

The potential of new customers stopping into the giftshop en route to their assigned F1 grandstand seat was enough to keep the Singh’s excitement high. However, she said the excitement faded when the track fencing was installed directly in front of them making it a hassle for customers, primarily from the nearby Strip, to access them.

Those fences may be gone nearly two months later, but recovery is ongoing with the Flamingo Bridge still standing.

“They pass the bridge and go all the way down,” Singh said. “That's the kind of business that we're losing. That's not supposed to be happening.”

It’s a story that Andrew Woods, director of UNLV’s Center for Business and Economic Research, knows well: which businesses won and which lost during Formula One?

“It seems like a little bit of a tale of two different cities in terms of success or not,” Woods said during a virtual interview.

MGM Resorts reported the three-day racing event as its highest-grossing weekend ever while dealers at Wynn Resorts reportedly split $1 million in tips over those three days. It’s part of the $1.37 billion casinos won in November 2023 statewide. That number comes from the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s most recent report, which shows the Strip hit its second-highest grossing month ever: $820,99,082. That’s 22.6 percent, or $151,478,070, more than revenue reported during November 2022.

However, as Woods acknowledged, that success was largely focused on the Strip. Downtown Las Vegas lost nearly $1.6 million in November 2023 compared to November 2022, per the report.

“Other parts of town were very empty,” Woods said. “Sometimes, that’s how events go in Las Vegas, right? There are certain events that some properties benefit off of and others may not.”

Beyond the Flamingo bridge, F1 immediately reported after racing weekend that it also left behind $1.2 billion in economic impact. The official and certified amount is not expected from Clark County until later in January.

The racing giant also left behind nearly four miles of upgraded and repaved roads. But, as Clark County Commission Chair Tick Segerblom told 8 News Now on Thursday, their $40 million ask for the county to reimburse them may be left in the dust.

“If we want to start talking about dollars and cents, let's look at what the county has expended to make that race happen. Let's look at what the citizens of Las Vegas have lost to make that race happen,” Segerblom said, speaking of ongoing negotiations with F1 that have not seen “any progress” in recent weeks. “Maybe they should be paying us money. They make money off our bridges. They make money everywhere.”

While Las Vegas continues to await the official economic scope F1 left behind, businesses such as Singh’s are bracing for a potential of nine more years of impacts as they recover from the first year.

“Do you guys think you’ll be able to survive another 10 years of this race?” 8 News Now Reporter Ryan Matthey asked. “No, not at all,” Singh said, staring at the nearby bridge potential customers could use to take their business elsewhere.

While F1 has another two years in its contract with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to race annually down the Strip, Clark County Commissioners have designated it an annual event for another nine years.

New video shows man charging at Las Vegas judge before attack https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/new-video-shows-man-charging-at-las-vegas-judge-before-attack/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 01:20:23 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712431 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- New video the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Friday shows a man jumping a table and charging at a Las Vegas judge before attacking her and several staff.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.

The new video shows a different angle than in the widely shared video Wednesday. In the new video, Holthus' marshal, Shane Brandon, appears to prepare to handcuff Redden, which Redden sees. He then jumps over a table and runs toward Holthus' bench.

After leaping over the bench, Redden allegedly slammed Holthus’ head against a wall, struck her once on the head, and pulled some hair out of her head, documents said. She then hid under her desk “balled up covering her face.” The ensuing struggle lasted several minutes.

Brandon received 25 stitches to a gash on his face, documents said. He also dislocated his shoulder.

Redden also hit and punched a corrections officer who was present in the courtroom, documents said. Holthus’ law clerk, Michael Lasso, was cut several times on his hand in the melee.

After the attack, in a holding cell near the courtroom, Redden reportedly told an officer, “Judge has it out for me,” “Judge is evil,” “I’m sorry you guys had to see that,” documents said. Another officer said Redden asked him if what he did was wrong.

Redden also told corrections officers he had a bad day and tried to kill her, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators first obtained Thursday.

In a filing Friday, Holthus ordered officers to bring Redden to court “by any and all means necessary" for the interrupted hearing's continuance Monday, the 8 News Now Investigators first reported. Redden could still appear in court via teleconference from jail.

Redden faced 13 charges in connection with Wednesday’s attack in a new court case. A Las Vegas Justice Court judge, not Holthus, will hear bail arguments in that case Tuesday.

As the 8 News Now Investigators reported Wednesday, Redden was previously in front of Holthus on charges of malicious destruction of property. Holthus granted him probation in that case. Records show he served prison time on a domestic battery charge for a year, starting in 2021. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months.

Las Vegas police: Man rams 2 police cars, hits wall in stolen vehicle https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/las-vegas-police-man-rams-2-police-cars-hits-wall-in-stolen-vehicle/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 01:16:59 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712301 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - A man is accused of hitting two Las Vegas Metropolitan police vehicles before crashing into a wall with a stolen car, according to police.

It happened on Friday shortly before 3:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of East Lake Mead Boulevard near Pecos Road.

Las Vegas police received a call of a suspicious vehicle and when the license plate was provided the information registered as a stolen vehicle, police said.

When officers arrived they found a man sleeping inside the stolen vehicle. Officers then used two patrol vehicles to block the stolen vehicle in.

The officers then woke the man up and gave him commands to exit the stolen vehicle. The man refused to comply, and instead rammed the stolen vehicle into the two unoccupied police vehicles until he was able to maneuver the vehicle out of the area, according to police.

Moments later the man was accused of crashing the stolen vehicle into a block wall a short distance away, police said. Following the crash, the man left the scene on foot but police were able to locate him nearby and arrest him.

The man then told police he had some pain from the airbags deploying when he crashed into the wall. No officers were injured during the incident.

New lift, more parking awaits skiers, snowboarders this year at Lee Canyon https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/new-lift-more-parking-await-skiers-snowboarders-this-year-at-lee-canyon/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 01:06:42 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712407 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The new year means new experiences here at the Lee Canyon Ski Resort and skiers and snowboarders are thrilled over the new developments.

"It was good that they expanded," local Monica Liriano said.

"We are anticipating opening our two upper chairs and our new grand opening of the Ponderosa chair lift," said Lee Canyon marketing director Jim Seely.

In addition, the ski resort has expanded its parking with now almost 1,000 spots available for visitors to use. Before, it was close to 500.

"It was definitely needed," a local snowboarder said.

With 16 inches of snowfall, Friday made for a busy day at Lee Canyon and after a tumultuous fall in which weather caused many problems for people who live on and around the mountain. Seely says it feels good to be back.

"All of a sudden, tropical storm Hilary comes in and did what it did, so that really halted our momentum up here. But we were able to get through it and so far it's been a successful winter season," Seely said.

For families, Seely shared that the resort just debuted a new pass for kids that allows them to ski and snowboard for free.

"We have the Power Kids pass which is a free season pass for kids 12 and under. Great to get the whole family up here," he added.

The Ponderosa Base parking is currently open and the Ponderosa lift will open on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Reno arsonist seen fleeing deadly fire with gas can sentenced to life without parole https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/reno-arsonist-seen-fleeing-deadly-fire-with-gas-can-sentenced-to-life-without-parole/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 23:59:28 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712358 RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada man who was spotted running from a burning Reno apartment building with a gas can in his hand has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to two murder charges in the 2020 fire.

Two women died and 13 people were injured, some while jumping from second-floor windows to escape the pre-dawn flames that destroyed the eight-unit apartment complex southeast of downtown on July 20, 2020.

Brian Bandy, 35, of Sun Valley pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the deaths of Katherine White, 70, and Diana Engstrom, 51. They died of smoke inhalation inside their apartments.

Washoe District Judge Kathleen Sigurdson sentenced Bandy on Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A man who saw Bandy running with the gas can and jump into a car called 911 then followed him until police were able to initiate a traffic stop and take him into custody, prosecutors said. Police said an investigation revealed Bandy owed money to someone living in the apartment complex and had argued with that person in the weeks before the fire.

Investigators said Bandy poured gasoline on wooden steps outside one of the apartments and lit it on fire. By the time firefighters arrived about 5:30 a.m., the building was already engulfed in flames and thick black smoke.

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks said the eight families who lived at the complex on Broadway Boulevard lost their life's possessions. He praised the witness who called police and followed Bandy as he fled.

“His selfless acts are highly commendable and helped bring this defendant to justice,” Hicks said in a statement Friday.

Nevada GOP congressional candidate leaves tight US House race to defend her state Assembly seat https://www.8newsnow.com/news/politics/nevada-legislature/nevada-gop-congressional-candidate-leaves-tight-us-house-race-to-defend-her-state-assembly-seat/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 23:38:28 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712340 RENO, Nev. (AP) — The establishment-backed Republican candidate for Nevada's most competitive congressional district is dropping out of the race to defend her current seat in the state Assembly, she announced Thursday.

Heidi Kasama said she would focus on ending the Democratic supermajority in the Assembly rather than aiming for a seat in Washington. Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo's veto power would be significantly diminished in the next legislative session if Republicans are a superminority both in the Assembly and in the Senate, where Democrats are one seat shy of the override margin.

“I could not imagine myself in Washington, DC trying to fix Congress if Governor Lombardo faced veto-proof majorities in both chambers at home in Nevada," Kasama said in a statement. "Any such victory would be a hollow one.”

The surprise decision leaves conservative policy analyst Drew Johnson, who lost a race for the Clark County Commission by 336 votes, and former state Sen. Elizabeth Helgelien as the two Republicans vying to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Susie Lee, who was reelected last year by 4 percentage points over Republican April Becker. Both Johnson and Helgelien had raised significantly less money than Kasama.

The 3rd Congressional District, which includes parts of Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City and unincorporated Clark County, has long been considered Nevada's most competitive. Democrats have a slight edge in active registered voters, though independents make up the largest voting bloc in the district.

Kasama said in the statement that the decision to defend her Assembly seat came after discussions with both Lombardo and her family. Lombardo endorsed her moments after she announced that she would again campaign in the state's 2nd Assembly District.

Assemblywoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno, who is chair of the Nevada State Democratic Party, said in a statement that the move “makes it clear how worried extreme Republicans are about the strength of Susie Lee’s campaign.”

Kasama will face off in her Assembly primary against Clark County GOP Chair Jesse Law, who was indicted over his role as a "fake elector" for then-President Donald Trump following the 2020 election. He announced his candidacy last month, hours before he was indicted by the state attorney general.

Law, who has pleaded not guilty, faces felony charges that would bring between one and four or five years in prison, respectively.

Multi-family building partially collapses in east Las Vegas, displaces 14 people https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/multi-family-building-partially-collapses-in-east-las-vegas-displaces-14-people/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 23:12:29 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712278 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A building in east Las Vegas partially collapsed Friday afternoon, leaving 14 people displaced.

The Clark County Fire Department responded to reports of a roof collapse shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of Issac Avenue.

CCFD arrived within six minutes after the incident was reported to find a two-story apartment building with a partially collapsed roof which was blocking access to the front door entrances.

Five residents could not get out due to a blocked entrance. CCFD entered through windows on the opposite side of the building to assist five people out of the windows and down the ladders. The Red Cross originally reported in a news release that "emergency responders tell us one person suffered a severe injury," but the Clark County Fire Department, in a separate release, said, "There were no injuries reported by any occupants on scene."

Emergency responders said the collapse was not caused by a fire, but was likely because of the age of the building. According to a listing for the building on Zillow, it was built in 1983.

The Red Cross said they are working with those affected to provide immediate help for food and housing, as well as necessities like medication, glasses, and comfort items.

"I feel extreme compassion for these people," Nikki Morachnick, the disaster action team coordinator and volunteer from the Red Cross of Southern Nevada. Morachnick said many of the displaced tenants have no resources and the Red Cross has enough budget to situate them for up to a few days.

"It's a very traumatic experience" for the tenants, she said. "And they were very upset. And everyone's very concerned about where they're going to be living the next few months."

Morachnick said the CCFD told her the building was condemned.

That forced out the tenants in all four units in the building. Most of the damage and debris seemed to stem from the portion of the roof hanging over the two upstairs balconies.

Katherine Lusk, a downstairs tenant, was home when she heard what happened.

"It just fell over," Lusk said. "I was sitting in the living room and it was a huge crash."

Lusk was in the process of moving her personal effects out of her apartment within a few hours of the collapse.

"I can't believe this happened," she said.

CCFD was assisted by the North Las Vegas Fire Department and in total two engines, one truck, one battalion chief, and one EMS supervisor responded (14 personnel). CCFD cleared the scene at 2:55 PM.

Las Vegas judge orders attacker back to court 'by any and all means necessary' https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/las-vegas-judge-orders-attacker-back-to-court-by-any-and-all-means-necessary/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:41:34 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712154 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Las Vegas judge attacked in court Wednesday has ordered the man who lunged over her bench, injuring her and several staff, to appear before her Monday “by any and all means necessary,” court documents said.

Holthus was about to deny Redden’s probation request when Redden ran up to her, jumped over the bench, and attacked her, video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators showed. Several other people then fought with Redden before throwing him to the ground.

Video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators shows several minutes of chaos after a man jumped a judge's bench, attacking her. (KLAS)

After leaping over the bench, Redden allegedly slammed Holthus’ head against a wall, struck her once on the head, and pulled some hair out of her head, documents said. She then hid under her desk “balled up covering her face.” The ensuing struggle lasted several minutes.

Holthus’ marshal, identified as Shane Brandon, received 25 stitches to a gash on his face, documents said. Brandon was preparing to handcuff Redden at the time. He also dislocated his shoulder.

Redden also hit and punched a corrections officer who was present in the courtroom, documents said. Holthus’ law clerk, Michael Lasso, was cut several times on his hand in the melee.

Las Vegas Metro police released this booking photo of Deobra Redden, 30, taken after the court attack on Jan. 3, 2024. (LVMPD/KLAS)

While at the Clark County Detention Center, Redden allegedly spit in a corrections officer’s face, police said. Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said Holthus returned to work Thursday.

Holthus was also working Friday, as indicated by the filing of new documents in the initial attempted battery case. The filing Friday ordered officers to bring Redden to court "by any and all means necessary." Redden could still appear in court via teleconference from jail.

Redden faced 13 charges in connection with Wednesday's attack in a new court case. A Las Vegas Justice Court judge, not Holthus, will hear bail arguments in that case Tuesday.

As the 8 News Now Investigators reported Wednesday, Redden was previously in front of Holthus on charges of malicious destruction of property. Records show he served prison time on a domestic battery charge for a year, starting in 2021. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months. A board granted Redden parole in 2022.

4 from Las Vegas charged in Jan. 6 investigations, here's where their cases stand https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/4-from-las-vegas-charged-in-jan-6-investigations-heres-where-their-cases-stand/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:15:09 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712079 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- In the three years since the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S Capitol, two men with Las Vegas ties have been imprisoned, one is awaiting a trial and one is awaiting sentencing.

The man deemed the “Spider Nazi,” who climbed on the exterior of the U.S. Capitol building and then went inside through a broken window most-recently pleaded guilty.

After his arrest in December 2022, Brandon Dillard, 40, of Las Vegas, initially faced charges of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a Capitol Building; and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol Building, documents said.

In November, Dillard agreed to plead guilty to a charge of disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, documents said. The charge faces a prison sentence of a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Brandon Dillard, of Las Vegas, is accused of entering the U.S. Capitol through this broken window. (KLAS)

In January 2021, a person uploaded a 90-minute video of the insurrection to an FBI database, documents said. The video includes a person, wearing a spider web-hooded sweatshirt, climbing down an exterior Capitol wall. The same person then entered the Capitol building through a broken window, documents said.

Online comments gave the person seen climbing on the building the moniker “#SpiderNazi,” documents said.

Investigators reviewed more videos, finding the same man in videos with his face exposed, they said. The FBI then compared the man in the video to Dillard’s Nevada driver’s license photo, finding “a strong resemblance,” they wrote in court documents. The FBI also obtained data from Dillard’s phone carrier, which showed his phone in the area of the Capitol on Jan. 6, they said.

Travel records also showed Dillard traveled from Las Vegas to the Washington Area on Jan. 5 and returned to Las Vegas on Jan. 8.

Two other men with Las Vegas ties were already serving prison sentences for their roles on Jan. 6.

Ronald “Ronnie” Sandlin, who was living in Las Vegas, began serving a 63-month prison sentence in December 2022. Nathaniel “Nate” DeGrave, also of Las Vegas, started his sentence last summer.

On the day of the riot, DeGrave, Sandlin, and a third man, Josiah Colt, of Idaho, met in a hotel room in Maryland and later entered the Capitol. Prosecutors said DeGrave assaulted at least two U.S. Capitol Police officers and was armed with bear spray, according to documents.

The 8 News Now Investigators interviewed both DeGrave and Sandlin from jail in 2021. Inside the Capitol, Sandlin attempted to rip off an officer’s helmet before reaching the U.S. Senate Chamber. While leaving the building, Sandlin took an oil painting off a wall before leaving it behind, prosecutors said.

The FBI arrested Ronald “Ronnie” Sandlin outside of Nathan “Nate” DeGrave’s apartment near the Las Vegas Strip on Jan. 29, 2021. (KLAS)

Sandlin was also seen on video smoking weed inside the building. He is heard on the video saying, “People are smoking weed in here. Thank you, patriot. We made history in here,” according to court documents.

In the months after Jan. 6, DeGrave raised more than $120,000 where he called himself “a political prisoner,” prosecutors said.

Last March, the FBI arrested Bradley Nelson, a North Las Vegas truck driver, for allegedly entering the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and then tweeting about it, saying in part, “I was in the capital [sic]… and all hell broke loose,” documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained said.

Nelson, who the FBI said is a commercial truck driver, drove his truck from southern Nevada to Washington, D.C. in January 2021, and parked it at an inspection station, they said.

Bradley Nelson as seen in various surveillance images on Jan. 6, 2021, according to prosecutors. (KLAS)

The FBI later identified Nelson from his Nevada driver’s license and videos of the insurrection. Federal investigators also said Nelson’s cell phone was in the area, including inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Nelson has pleaded not guilty and remained out of custody pending trial.

Last April, a judge sentenced a fifth man, Josiah Kenyon, of Winnemucca, to six years in prison for his involvement. Kenyon attacked officers and caused more than $40,000 in damage.

Kenyon was seen in and around the building wearing a “Nightmare Before Christmas” Jack Skellington costume, documents said. While outside the building, he tried to break a window with his fist before using a flagpole to hit it.

A judge scheduled Dillard’s sentencing for Feb. 8. He remained out of custody.

Seven people died in the riot or in the immediate days after, including an officer for the Capitol police, the Jan. 6 committee found.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith to oversee the department’s investigations into the former president and the lead-up to the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection.

The FBI has arrested more 1,200 people for crimes related to Jan. 6, the department said. More than 450 people face charges of assaulting or impeding law enforcement. As of Friday, the longest Jan. 6-related sentence a judge has imposed is 14 years for a man who threw a chair at a line of officers. According to a release, the Golden Knights partnered with America's VetDogs to co-raise a future service dog for a United States veteran or first responder with disabilities.

America's VetDogs is a national nonprofit that helps provide specially trained service dogs to veterans, first responders, and active-duty service members with disabilities at no cost to them.

“The Knights’ commitment to excellence extends beyond the ice, as they join us in raising a future service dog for a veteran or first responder with disabilities," John Miller, president and CEO of America’s VetDogs, said. "This unique partnership symbolizes our shared values of dedication, teamwork, and a profound commitment to support those who have selflessly served our nation.”

The puppy, a seven-week-old yellow Labrador retriever, will join the team in the coming weeks and spend 16 to 18 months going through basic training while socializing with the players, staff, and fans.

What's Cool At School? - Youngsters get hands-on experience learning how government works with "KidsVention" https://www.8newsnow.com/community/whats-cool-at-school/whats-cool-at-school-youngsters-get-hands-on-experience-learning-how-government-works-with-kidsvention/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 15:37:38 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711583 LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) - Thanks to a program called “Voices In Voting” hundreds of elementary and middle school students from all over the state were on a giant zoom call recently for the 2023 “Kidsvention.”

Guest speaker Punam Mathur coined a new word for the students:

“Think about a Nevada where young people have become active! And maybe that becomes NEW-vada. Oooh! See that?”

Kidsvention embodies the Voices In Voting slogan “empowering youth and inspiring democracy” by holding debates between high schoolers and state lawmakers with younger students voting yes or no on questions like whether the U-S should require 18-year-olds to register to vote (the kids said we should).

After back and forth discussions on maybe changing school start times for public school students, more Kidsvention voters said start times should change.

There was a musical recess with the Del Webb Middle School Concert Choir singing “Let Freedom Ring” by the late great George Dare.

And there was once last - and maybe even more important - debate: should students in all grades get “recess” time during the school day?

State Senator Melanie Scheible from Las Vegas:

“I think recess is an incredibly important part of not just the school day, but also the work day. There are days when I don't get a recess, when I work straight through the whole day, eat lunch at my desk, and those days are not as good as the days that I have recess.”

Foothill High School student Vivian Schell was a no:

“Recess is fun and useful for elementary school students, but most middle and high school students would rather leave 30 minutes early.”

And what did Kidsventioneers say?

Students voted 97 to 13 that recess is a good idea.

So much fun with all the student debaters and state lawmakers. You can watch the whole event (about an hour-and-a-half) by clicking - - - > HERE.

Thanks to retired State Senator Joyce Woodhouse, the Nevada Department of Education and the whole Kidsvention team for having me as the host

Las Vegas police: 2 arrested, 1 wanted in deadly homeless encampment shooting https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/las-vegas-police-to-provide-update-1-month-after-deadly-homeless-encampment-shooting/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 04:54:05 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711319 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - Two people have been arrested, and another suspect remains outstanding, after a deadly shooting at a Las Vegas homeless encampment.

It took place on Dec. 1, 2023, at East Charleston Boulevard and North Honolulu Street near U.S. 95 at an encampment where five unhoused people were living.

Police allege that Cristobal Omar Perez, 31, was the suspected gunman, and his girlfriend Kylee Au Young, 21, was another suspect in the shooting.

Two people were killed in the shooting and were identified by police as Timothy Brenton and Ashley Burrell. Three other unhoused people were also injured during the shooting.

Police told 8 News Now they believed the suspects had planned the shooting.

"What we know now is this was clearly a targeted planned attack on these specific unhoused individuals that were living there in that encampment," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson said at a news conference on Thursday night.

Before the shooting, Perez was allegedly dropped off in a neighborhood north of where the shooting occurred, according to police. He later waited for a black SUV to pick him up along Sandhill Road near Charleston. Once the SUV parked on Sandhill Road, Perez is accused of walking toward the homeless encampment where he immediately started shooting, police said.

East Las Vegas valley shooting leaves 1 dead and 4 injured near Charleston Boulevard and U.S. 95. on Dec. 1, 2023. (KLAS)

After the shooting, Perez left the area and met up with Au Young who was waiting in another getaway vehicle for him. They were then dropped off and the two drove home to their residences in the northwest Las Vegas valley, police said.

Metro detectives continue to look for another suspect in the case and are working to identify that person, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson.

On Thursday night, police said they were still investigating a motive in the shooting.

"All signs indicate that there was some sort of dispute between a relative of Cristobal who lives in the area to the north of where this shooting took place and then as a result of this dispute this shooting occurred," Johansson said.

Both Perez and Au Young face murder and battery with a deadly weapon charges, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

The hidden costs of owning electric cars https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/the-hidden-costs-of-owning-electric-cars/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 04:32:37 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711265 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - EV owners love their cars. But an 8 News Now Investigators' examination of insurance costs and other money associated with ownership of electric vehicles shows the bottom line might be a lot higher than consumers realize.

Take Craig Moe of California, for instance. Moe owns four Teslas and loves each one of them.

"I'm a fan," Moe said. "A huge fan."

Parking his silver electric sedan at the charging station at the Premium Outlets in downtown Las Vegas, Moe was heading to lunch while his car sat feeding on enough juice to get him through another four hundred miles or so. He says it takes a half hour or so to get a full charge and that's about all he needs to do to keep his Tesla purring.

"There's no maintenance," Moe said. "There's no oil changes, no fan belts, no filters, no smog, no exhausts. I mean you just drive them. It's like a glorified golf cart."

But like the ride in a golf cart, the finances that comprise owning an electric vehicle – some of them not easily ascertainable at first blush – can lead to bumpy terrain.

"The hidden costs with owning any EV would be that of insurance repairs and god forbid there's any damage," Carl Cook, owner of Cook Insurance Group in Las Vegas, said. "And in this town, you're going to have some damage."

The 8 News Now Investigators asked Cook to run some numbers on insurance costs in particular. Cook, then, ran the 2023 Tesla Model X against a handful of top-brand vehicles on the road today.

Cook, for a baseline comparison, assumed a policy would have $300k in liability insurance and uninsured motorist coverage as well as $500 deductibles for comprehensive and collision insurance.

The results: Tesla was over $1100 more than the second-priciest vehicle on the list. A year's worth of insurance (at last year's prices) will cost the Model X owner $7417, and a 2023 Ford Escape owner would pay $6346 for an annual policy.

But what's more staggering is a comparison between the Model X and two of the world's best-selling Sedans, the Toyota Camry and The Nissan Altima. Those vehicles would, under Cook's quotes, cost significantly less than the Model X, at $4,414 and $4,422, respectively.

What's more, Cook says, insurance companies might require new Tesla owners to acquire underwriting approval and wait through a two-week application process. In short, those companies are making it unduly difficult for a new EV owner to get their purchase or lease insured four-wheeler.

The digital insurance agency Insurify – which makes a commission on insurance policies bought through its website, acknowledges some hurdles in buying an electric vehicle. Namely, a report from Insurify details, auto dealers are not always prepared to stock their showrooms with EVs, that battery costs are exceedingly expensive, and the cars themselves are pricey.

Those items, though, do not seem to be deterring EV customers. Insurify reports over half of all car buyers are considering an electric vehicle, up from 38% in 2023. And the market for EVs is flourishing. Last year, 33 new EVs hit the U.S. retail market, according to the web insurer. In 2024, that number is expected to jump to 50 new or updated EVs.

Lawsuit alleges CCSD, teacher’s union protect employees accused of sexual misconduct https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/lawsuit-alleges-ccsd-teachers-union-protect-employees-accused-of-sexual-misconduct/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 02:31:44 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711204 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A lawsuit accuses the Clark County School District and the teacher's union of protecting educators accused of sexual assault.

It was filed at Clark County District Court on Wednesday and outlines a pattern of CCSD employees getting moved to different schools following an accusation.

“Under the collective bargaining agreement, a teacher who does this, if they're not convicted of a crime, they can be transferred to a new school. There's going to be no documents or records about the abuse that occurred,” Dennis Prince of the Prince Law Group said.

Prince filed the lawsuit on behalf of his client who was assaulted by Darryl Lancaster.

A former teacher at Jo Mackey Magnet Elementary School, Lancaster was arrested in May of last year for sexual misconduct. In a criminal complaint, North Las Vegas police claim he groomed his victim.

According to a lawsuit, Lancaster was moved to eight different schools over a 20-year span.

Prince believes there may be other victims.

“The district needs to be extraordinarily diligent as well as at the school level of making sure that these abusers are removed. But under the collective bargaining agreement with the union, it's almost impossible to remove them,” Prince said.

In court filings, Prince cites portions of the 2021/2023 teacher contract where it states allegations of misconduct don't have to be in a teacher's record.

If an educator is convicted of a crime, they can have it removed from their personnel file after three years, according to the lawsuit.

Prince said he believes the same language exists in the new teacher contract.

“The new school administration, including the principal of the new school, would have no knowledge of what happened,” Prince said.

Prince points to a pattern of bad teacher behavior at CCSD. From 2005-2015 more than 30 district employees were arrested on sexual misconduct allegations, according to the lawsuit.

Court records show Lancaster was arrested in January of 2023 for misconduct at Jo Mackey.

Lancaster pleaded no contest on July 31 in a plea agreement, avoiding jail time.

“Clearly the school administration and principal of that school knew and was aware of this,” Prince said.

Prince added that Lancaster was allowed to remain in the classroom and the abuse of his client continued to go unchecked.

According to court records, Lancaster pleaded guilty on Nov. 27 to attempted lewdness with a child and distribution of visual representation depicting sexual misconduct. The former teacher was originally charged with multiple counts of lewdness with a child, producing child porn, and luring a minor.

CCSD declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing pending ligation. The teacher's union, CCEA, hasn’t responded to a request for a statement.

Surprise vehicle donation provides relief to Las Vegas family of 8 days after deadly carjacking https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/surprise-vehicle-donation-provides-relief-to-las-vegas-family-of-8-days-after-deadly-carjacking/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 02:11:52 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711146 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - When the keys changed hands to the mourning widow and mother to seven children, the previous owner told her, “We hope it serves your family well.”

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Tyler Corder, CFO of Findlay Automotive Group, invited members of the media to attend a donation event Thursday of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to the Lopez family following the carjacking and death of 39-year-old Jerry Lopez.

“Honestly, I would never think in a million years that this would be our life,” Karen Lopez said during the donation. “There's just no words I am just so utterly grateful that people would take the time to donate.”

The van donation comes at a time when the Lopez family was left without a primary vehicle due to their previous van becoming a part of the crime scene following last week’s fatal shooting.

Nick Farese, LVMPD Deputy Chief, explained that the Lopez family’s van had serious damage from gunfire and held significance to crime scene investigators.

“The cumulative trauma of that van to begin with- I don't think any wife or spouse or child would want that vehicle back knowing that their loved one was killed in it,” Farese told reporters.

The status of the family’s van also meant Lopez couldn’t retrieve her children’s car seats, but members from Car Seat for Christy, a local nonprofit, immediately filled the donated vehicle with new car seats with help from Clark County School District Police personnel.

“Trying to transport seven children around, car seats and everything, this is more of a blessing than people realize,” Lopez said.

A spokesperson for LVMPD provided a link to Life Baptist Church that the Lopez family is asking donations to go through since GoFundMe takes a portion of the donations.

Clark County welcomes new firefighting graduates https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/clark-county-welcomes-new-firefighting-graduates/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 01:47:12 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711112 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Clark County Fire Department (CCFD) kicked off the new year with new members. Dozens of recruits graduated from the academy and became firefighters during a ceremony at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino on Thursday morning.

Twenty weeks of rigorous training later, Brent Bell is the first in his family to become a firefighter.

"I admired their service and commitment to the community and the sense of brotherhood is something that I very much admired and wanted to be a part of," Bell explained. "My favorite part, though, is definitely all of the skills that we learned, getting to force doors, throwing ladders, going topside at the training center on the burn tower. Those things were just activities that I always hoped I could do, and now I actually can do them."

The Bell family celebrated Brent Bell's transition from Clark County Fire Department recruit to firefighter. He is one of 47 new members to serve the Las Vegas Valley. (KLAS/Lauren Negrete)

He joins a class of 47 including Cailin Herrera, who was one of just four women to graduate.

"There is just so much in the fire service that allows me to help people," she said. Her favorite part was overcoming her weaknesses and building on her strengths.

Herrera got a head start through the CCFD Explorers program and encourages others to join and bring on the girl power. "With more females on the department, I hope it inspires more younger females to then want to join."

As the department welcomed a new round of firefighters, its command staff shared the numbers that were needed.

Deputy Chief Thomas Touchstone said the department suffered shortages from the pandemic and from a retiring workforce.

"A lot of people just left the organization. They were close to retirement and were on the tail end of their career," he said.

On top of those struggles is the task of keeping up with the county's growth.

Touchstone said the shortages don't impact response times. Instead, it spelled forced overtime for many crews. Touchstone said a 56-hour work week is normal but could become 80 with overtime shifts. With added staff, they can relieve crews.

Fire Chief John Steinbeck agreed. "They're tired and they need more assistance, and we're growing, and we have more special events and there's more demand of service and everything demands that we have more personnel."

During the ceremony, the department paid tribute to the members they lost this year including Deputy Chief Warren Whitney and Fire Captain Dennis Snider.

Steinbeck said that is tradition.

"I had the honor of working with those two exceptional officers who had a big impact, so we honor them and will continue to do so."

The graduates will be assigned to Clark County battalions throughout the Las Vegas valley.

The group began with 70. Command staff said losing 20% is typical. However, they hope to add more in the next academies. One starts in February.

Anyone interested in a career as a firefighter can visit the department’s website pages, www.JoinCCFD.org, or contact its recruitment office at (702) 455-8257 or by email at  CCFDRecruitment@ClarkCountyNV.gov.

Man in Las Vegas courtroom attack video says he had bad day, tried to kill judge https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/man-in-las-vegas-courtroom-attack-says-he-had-bad-day-tried-to-kill-judge-documents/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 01:39:52 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711008 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The man who attacked a Las Vegas judge as she was sentencing him Wednesday told corrections officers he had a bad day and tried to kill her, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison time, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.

Holthus was about to deny Redden’s probation request when Redden ran up to her, jumped over the bench, and attacked her, video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators showed. Several other people then fought with Redden before throwing him to the ground. The ensuing struggle lasted several minutes.

Holthus' marshal, identified as Shane Brandon, received 25 stitches to a gash on his face, documents said. Brandon was preparing to handcuff Redden at the time. He also dislocated his shoulder.

After leaping over the bench, Redden allegedly slammed Holthus' head against a wall, struck her once on the head, and pulled some hair out of her head, documents said. She then hid under her desk "balled up covering her face."

Holthus described Redden "as being 'big, strong and angry,'" police said. Medical personnel treated her in the justice center. A family member later brought her to a hospital due to her continued pain.

Redden also hit and punched a corrections officer who was present in the courtroom, documents said. Holthus' law clerk, Michael Lasso, was cut several times on his hand in the melee.

Photos showed a bloody scene, with blood on Holthus' bench and on documents scattered in the area.

Daniel Martin, a witness who was in the courtroom, described the attack to the 8 News Now Investigators.

"It was just a total chaotic commotion," Martin said. "Honestly, I was super surprised like I've never seen anything like that in my whole life, that looked like something out of the NFL or something like that."

Martin said he wanted to help the judge, but his public defender told him to stay back.

"I was in conflict cause as a natural man you want to protect a woman," Martin said.

After the attack, in a holding cell near the courtroom, Redden reportedly told an officer, "Judge has it out for me," "Judge is evil," "I'm sorry you guys had to see that," documents said. Another officer said Redden asked him if what he did was wrong.

A Hazmat crew then cleaned the courtroom, police said.

While at CCDC, Redden allegedly spit in a corrections officer's face, police said.

Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said Holthus returned to work Thursday.

Also on Thursday, Redden refused to show up for his initial appearance in the same building where the attack happened the day before. He was scheduled to return to court on Jan. 9.

Holthus was scheduled to continue the sentencing hearing on her case on Monday, Jan. 8. The case is unrelated to the new charges related to the Jan. 3 incident.

Redden faced new charges as of Thursday:

  • Coercion w/force or threat of force
  • Extortion
  • Intimidate public officers/others, with the use of force
  • Disregard the safety of person/property
  • Battery by prisoner, probationer, or parolee
  • Unlaw act to excrete/fluid by a prisoner in a confined area
  • Battery on a protected person

Redden was previously in front of Holthus on charges of malicious destruction of property. Records show he served prison time on a domestic battery charge for a year, starting in 2021. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months. A board granted Redden parole in 2022.

Redden, who appeared in court with his mother, has three felony convictions and nine misdemeanor convictions on his record, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained. Some of those cases were transferred to mental health court.

Tiny simulated town receives boost from Super Bowl, $1.8M in grants remain for nonprofits https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/tiny-simulated-town-receives-boost-from-super-bowl-1-8m-in-grants-remain-for-nonprofits/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 01:23:30 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711080 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- In the east Las Vegas valley, a tiny town is being built thanks, in part, to the first Super Bowl in Nevada.

Students of Title I schools in Clark County may already know Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada (JASN). The nonprofit ventures inside these schools to teach career readiness and financial literacy.

CEO and President Michelle Jackson calls this preparing at-risk students for the adult world ahead.

“In fourth grade, the kids are learning about income and expenses, profit and loss,” Jackson said, standing inside the nonprofit’s new office Tuesday while discussing the current services they offer. “When they get that first paycheck, we want them to know how to manage their money so that they aren't living paycheck to paycheck.”

Soon, those students will get a test run.

Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada CEO and President Michelle Jackson juxtaposes renderings of their new immersive town with renderings. (KLAS)

An estimated 84 percent of all fifth and ninth graders in the Clark County School District are expected to eventually visit a fully immersive and simulated town the nonprofit is building inside a former 24-Hour Fitness near Mountain Vista and Tropicana. The building houses both “BizTown” and “Finance Park,” two programs that will “pretend” put students to work with “pretend” budgets that may seem very real.

“They get to be the mayor, the city manager, they’re running everything,” Jackson said, referencing four walls inside the construction zone that will eventually become the pretend City of Las Vegas Government office.

Renderings of the completed space show this office surrounded by Home Depot, T-Mobile, Caesars Entertainment, and Five Guys stores, amongst others.

“They end up feeling like they have that career path and an understanding of how to manage their money at a younger age. They make less mistakes with their credit and the way that they spend their money, and we have a stronger economy and a stronger workforce that is prepared to be part of the workforce here in southern Nevada.”

Jackson said it’s the first-of-its-kind project in Nevada, with construction well underway, but financing not yet set in stone. JASN is one of several nonprofits that already received a touch-down of help from the first Super Bowl in Vegas.

The Las Vegas Super Bowl Host Committee (LVSBHC) and NFL Foundation partnered together to provide a combined $3 million worth of grants intended for distribution between nonprofits in Southern Nevada through the Super Bowl Legacy Grant Program.

LVSBHC Chief Community Engagement Officer Myisha Boyce refers to it as their way of leaving a lasting legacy in the area after the big game drives off.

“If there's something out there that is changing lives, we want to hear about it,” Boyce said, inside the JASN construction zone Tuesday. “(Grants are) non-restricted, which is rare for grant funding. So, this allows us to pour into nonprofits where things are needed most and there’s no restrictions on how those funds are used.”

Grants range from $5,800 for immediate-need projects, up to $58,000 for long-term impact projects. JASN is one of 29 recipients already chosen by LVSBHC that received a combined $1.2 million.

Boyce said those chosen, like JASN, had projects that meet their “pillars of focus”: D.E.I. (diversity, equity, inclusion), education, health and wellness, social justice and youth and young adults.

“We see them. We want people to take away that they see them too and that they’ll continue to help after the Super Bowl has passed,” Boyce said.

“The host committee being willing to say 'we're willing to align ourselves with Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada because we believe in this cause and we believe in what they're doing,' that is huge,” Jackson said. “It’s changing trajectories of nonprofits like us and ultimately the people that live here.”

The deadline for qualified nonprofits to apply to the Super Bowl Legacy Grant program is Friday, January 5 at 5:00 p.m. The streamlined application is on the LVSBHC’s website, while recipients will be announced the week before Super Bowl Sunday.

Tax evasion brings 3 years in prison for Las Vegas owner of Casa Don Juan restaurants https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/tax-evasion-brings-3-years-in-prison-for-las-vegas-owner-of-casa-don-juan-restaurants/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 00:52:54 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711081 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A Las Vegas restaurant owner/operator was sentenced Thursday to more than three years in prison for tax evasion, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Raul Gil, 63, who told bookkeepers at Casa Don Juan restaurants to create false sales numbers that resulted in underreporting sales by $5.1 million from 2014 through 2018, was sentenced to 37 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

The IRS was cheated out of $1.6 million in taxes, according to a news release from the office of Jason M. Frierson, U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada.

U.S. District Judge Andrew P. Gordon ordered Gil to pay $2,228,943.65 in restitution.

After the sales records were falsified, Gil sent them to an outside tax return preparer who prepared his federal income tax returns.

Gil pleaded guilty to tax evasion in August of 2022. At the time, he faced a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

During interviews with the IRS, Gil falsely stated that the daily cash reports and point-of-sale records were accurate. He repeated the lie to IRS-Criminal Investigation special agents, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division, United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada, and IRS Criminal Investigations Phoenix Field Office Acting Special Agent in Charge Carissa Messick made the announcement.

The case was investigated by the IRS criminal investigations unit. Trial Attorney Thomas Flynn of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Lopez of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada prosecuted the case.

Las Vegas judge returns to work 1 day after courtroom attack https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/clark-county-chief-judge-provides-update-on-those-injured-during-las-vegas-courtroom-attack/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 00:45:42 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710998 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - A Clark County District Court judge returned to work Thursday one day after a man attacked her in a video gone viral..

Judge Mary Kay Holthus was injured, received medical attention, and was released from medical assistance Wednesday afternoon, Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said Thursday. Wiese said Holthus remained sore and stiff.

Wiese briefed reporters Thursday afternoon about the attack that occurred at the Regional Justice Center on Jan. 3. He also spoke about the importance of added security in the courtroom.

Shane Brandon, a court marshal who was in the courtroom on Wednesday, was taken to the hospital and treated for a head injury and released. His injuries were still being treated on Thursday. A law clerk, identified as Michael Lasso, also received medical attention due to hand abrasions and was released by medical staff.

"We commend the heroic acts of Judge Holthus' staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant," Wiese said. The chief judge said Holthus thanked all the well-wishers and others who expressed concern for her and her staff.

"She is extremely grateful for those who took brave actions during the attack," Wiese added. "I want to make sure that the public is aware that the courthouse is a safe place to be, this was a very unique situation, and we are doing what we can to maintain the integrity of the court and the safety that we have here."

Several reporters asked Wiese what additional safety measures would be taken in the days following the courtroom attack. Crisis services have been arranged for those in need of assistance. Additional security personnel have been brought in to support courtroom coverage.

"We have notified Clark County management that there is a need for additional marshal positions in our high-risk calendars," Wiese added. "There's always a shortage of marshals, we think there could always be an increased security presence that would be better for the courthouse."

On Thursday, Redden refused to show up for his initial appearance in the same building where the attack happened the day before.

The Clark County District Attorney’s office requested Redden be held without bail. However, Pro-Tem Judge Lauren Diefenbach said she was uncomfortable arguing about bail without Redden present. Bail remained at $54,000.

Redden faces the following charges after the Jan. 3 courtroom attack.

  • Coercion w/force or threat of force
  • Extortion
  • Intimidate public officers/others, with the use of force
  • Disregard safety of person/property
  • Battery by prisoner, probationer, or parolee
  • Unlaw act excrete/fluid by prisoner in confined area
  • Battery on a protected person

He was due in court again on Jan. 8 and also on Jan. 9.

Charolette Richards, the Las Vegas 'Wedding Queen of the West,' dies at 89 https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/charolette-richards-the-las-vegas-wedding-queen-of-the-west-dies-at-89/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 23:16:29 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710963 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The "Wedding Queen of the West" has died, according to a statement from A Little White Wedding Chapel.

Charolette Richards, the woman behind perhaps the most famous wedding chapel in Las Vegas, died Dec. 13, according to a spokesperson for the chapel. She was 89 years old.

Richards sold the chapel in late 2022 after decades of building recognition as the site of numerous celebrity weddings. A sign at the chapel boasts that Joan Collins was married there. Michael Jordan, too.

A statement from the chapel said Richards transformed the Las Vegas wedding industry. "Focused on love, she wanted couples to be able to enjoy an affordable wedding in a beautiful location and as simple as easy as possible. This ethos led to Little White Wedding Chapel becoming the most famous wedding chapel in the world."

In addition to devotion to her customers, Richards was an innovator.

"She was the first to create the drive-thru wedding after a couple visiting the chapel couldn’t fit their wheelchair through the doors, so she married them just outside and thus conceived the drive-thru wedding chapel," a chapel spokesperson said.

Charolette Richards, owner of A Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nev., is shown in this 2022 photo. (KLAS)

Celebrity couples married at her chapel include Ben Affleck and Jenifer Lopez, Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas, Sarah Michelle Geller and Freddie Prinze Jr., Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

In an interview with The Herald in Scotland, Richards said she was the wedding coordinator when Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu took their vows at the Aladdin Hotel in 1967. "I got the judge, the flowers, his cake, everything," she said.

She is credited with decorating the room when Frank Sinatra married Mia Farrow in 1966.

She is estimated to have married a million couples in a career that extended beyond the chapel, which is on Las Vegas Boulevard just south of Charleston Boulevard.

"There are people that come from all over the world to come here just to see this place," Richards told 8 News Now in 2022. "And memories that will never end if you love each other."

In another interview about road construction blocking chapel entrances before Valentine's Day in 2022, she said, “I’m prepared. Honey, I’ve been doing this for — how long? — 68 years,” Richards said.

The chapel won't release details until next week, but it is making plans to honor Richards.

Brian Mills, president of the Vegas Wedding Chamber of Commerce, released this statement on Thursday:

The Vegas Wedding Chamber of Commerce mourns the loss of Charlotte Richards, founder of the Little White Wedding Chapel and an influential figure in our industry. Charlotte's visionary approach since 1951 made her chapel a symbol of romance and joy in Las Vegas, renowned for its unique offerings of weddings.

One remarkable story from Richards' early years involves her arrival in Las Vegas as an abandoned bride. With three children in tow, she came to meet her husband at the Stardust casino only to find that he never showed up. This led to her encountering a flower shop owner who offered her a job and a place to live. This job at the Little Church of the West marked the beginning of her journey in the wedding industry.

Richards eventually opened her own flower shop in a hotel room at the New Frontier hotel. After her first marriage was annulled, she married the man who helped her in her time of need, despite significant challenges. Following his death, Richards took a bold step and invested in a chapel that was for sale, A Little White Wedding Chapel, which became a cornerstone of her legacy.

One of the most significant contributions Charlotte Richards made to the Vegas Wedding Industry was the use of Celebrity Weddings in active daily marketing of Las Vegas Weddings to the World. As legend is told, in 1985 Charlotte was looking to sell A Little White Chapel until Joan Collins showed up and married Peter Holm on November 3rd. Her decision to put Joan Collins' name on her sign outside the Chapel brought press, fans, and world-wide fame that launched A Little White Wedding Chapel to a new level. This was enhanced further through the years by Celebrity nuptials of Michael Jordan, Brittany Spears and, most recently, Ben Affleck with Jennifer Lopez.

Charlotte's legacy extends beyond innovation; sometimes controversial, but always positive, Charlotte Richards created unforgettable experiences for countless couples. As we honor her life, we are inspired by her commitment to love and joy in the wedding industry. Charlotte's memory will continue to guide and inspire future generations in our community."

Man who killed mother, driver during Las Vegas carjacking rampage was arrested after crash with fentanyl in system https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/man-who-killed-mother-driver-during-las-vegas-carjacking-rampage-was-arrested-after-crash-with-fentanyl-in-system/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 20:27:07 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710781 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The man who killed his mother and then carjacked several people in Las Vegas, killing a father of seven in the process, was arrested months earlier for driving with a lethal amount of fentanyl in his system and told police a root may have caused it, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

Justin Jeffrey Davidson, 36, engaged police in two shootouts with two assault rifles on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. Two Metro police officers and three state troopers shot at Davidson 63 times and found his body inside one of the two cars he stole during the mayhem.

Davidson, of Henderson, was firing a gun near his family home at Placid Street and Maulding Avenue in southeast Las Vegas, police said. He then shot and killed his mother before stealing a police cruiser and carjacking two more people.

On March 11, 2023, a Nevada State Police Highway Patrol trooper responded to a crash involving Davidson on the 215 Beltway and South Jones Boulevard, documents said.

Davidson was driving too fast and crashed into another car, troopers said. Davidson’s car then traveled across several lanes of traffic and hit another car.

Davidson told the trooper he was not under the influence, but took “a root that helps you think better,” documents said. The trooper suspected Davidson was impaired after a field sobriety test.

The trooper arrested Davidson and brought him to a hospital for a blood test. The test came back positive for fentanyl, hydrocodone, methadone and THC, troopers said.

The amount of fentanyl in Davidson’s system was nearly 6 nanograms per milliliter – double the amount doctors say can lead to a fatal fentanyl overdose, documents said. Illicit fentanyl is 50-100 times more potent than morphine.

Police issued a warrant for Davidson’s arrest in August on a DUI charge, records said. Davidson appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court on the charge in October. Judge Joe Bonaventure granted an own recognizance walk-through, meaning Davidson did not have to go to jail or post bail.

A bench trial in the case was scheduled for March. As of Thursday, the case was not closed due to Davidson’s death.

Davidson has a string of drug arrests in Las Vegas dating back to March and September 2011, and at least one conviction in Las Vegas’ Eighth Judicial District Court, records show. He also has a drug arrest in Henderson in 2010 and a gun charge there in 2012. In his most serious offense before Wednesday, Davidson pleaded guilty in June 2007 to possession of a controlled substance.

In 2012, a federal grand jury charged Davidson for distributing oxycodone and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, records said. Davidson’s drug conviction prevented him from possessing a gun, prosecutors said at the time. A federal judge sentenced Davidson to 57 months in prison, records said. Davidson was then incarcerated at a California facility.

Police searching the desert wash near Davidson’s home found loaded ammo magazines of various calibers. Investigators found a notebook that contained writing that included a diagram of a potential ambush, indicating that Davidson had been preparing for a confrontation with officers.

In addition, police found electronic devices, trail cameras, bulletproof vests, tactical helmets, firearms, and components that police believed could be used to create firearm suppressors at Davidson’s home in Las Vegas. At his Henderson home, law enforcement found more notebooks and electronics. Investigators noted that they also found military manuals and documents detailing police response to mass-casualty events.

Police said other items included prepping supplies, propane, and an ample butane supply. However, investigators stopped short of saying Davidson was attempting to build an improvised explosive device, saying that those questions remained unanswered.

11-time convicted Las Vegas felon now facing attempted murder charges https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/11-times-convicted-las-vegas-felon-now-facing-attempted-murder-charges/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 20:13:37 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710650 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A 64-year-old Las Vegas man with an extensive criminal history faces 11 new charges after he allegedly tried to kill his friend by firing a shotgun into his car.

According to the arrest report, Thomas Dennis got into an argument with his friend on Dec. 17 just after midnight when the friend showed up at his home on 13th Street near Maryland Parkway and I-15 to check on him. The friend told police he was concerned about Dennis because he sounded sick and in distress during a phone call.

The friend said the two men got into an argument and Dennis pulled out a shotgun and fired twice as he drove away shattering the car's back window, police documents stated. The man whose name is redacted in the report said he feared for his life and he called 911.

Dennis, who is prohibited from possessing a weapon because of his previous convictions, admitted to damaging the car but told officers he used a pole, not a gun, and he did that when his friend attempted to reverse toward him, the report said.

According to police documents, Dennis has been arrested 156 times in Clark County for various crimes including drug possession, illegally having firearms and domestic violence. His most recent arrest was in Feb. 2023. He also has 11 prior convictions for drugs, larceny, and illegally having firearms dating back to 1980.

Dennis is charged with attempted murder, contempt of court, assault with the use of a deadly weapon (2 counts), discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle (2 counts), owning/possessing a gun by a prohibited person, using/possessing a stun device by a mentally ill person.

Dennis is currently being held at Clark County Detention Center and scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 17 for a preliminary hearing.

Lighting, school traffic subjects of 'Vision Zero' initiative in Las Vegas https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/lighting-school-traffic-subjects-of-vision-zero-initiative-in-las-vegas/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 19:59:43 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710730 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The city is making progress on its ambitious "Vision Zero" project to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes -- progress that you might notice in your own neighborhood.

At Rancho High School, traffic control prevents U-turns on a street where they had become a problem. In other parts of the city, raised lane markers reflect red to warn drivers against potential wrong-way driving. And lighting upgrades are underway as part of multimillion-dollar project all over the valley. The city has spent $10 million over the past three years already.

"At a time of year when it gets dark at 4:30, 5 p.m., lights are really critical to keep everyone safe on our roads," Councilwoman Olivia Diaz said Wednesday as the council heard an update from the Public Works Department.

More than 1,000 streetlight fixtures have been upgraded to LED lights. The next phase of the project will begin in Summerlin beginning sometime after April. The $1.5 million project is expected to last about nine months.

The city is also replacing some first-generation LED lights that have worn out since they were installed years ago.

Diaz said her constituents are always asking when the city will fix problems with lights. It's a battle, city officials acknowledge.

"We do have a wire theft problem that is hard to keep up with," Public Works Director Joey Paskey said. The city is replacing copper with aluminum wire, and there's a backlog of lights that need to be fixed.

Vision Zero was introduced in the summer of 2022, an effort to anticipate drivers' mistakes and reduce the chance of deadly crashes -- and the severity when crashes do happen. Many other cities had already adopted strategies before Las Vegas, and statistics at the time showed the city needed to rethink how it was approaching the problem.

Within city limits alone, there was an average of one fatal crash per week from 2015 to 2019. The valley's first traffic fatality of 2024 occurred Wednesday in Henderson.

"Due to a combination of distracted driving, high speeds, impairment, roadway and intersection design, and failure to obey traffic control devices, Las Vegas has seen a steady rise of vehicular crashes resulting in an average of one fatality and nearly three serious injury crashes per week," Paskey said as Vision Zero was announced. At the time, she was serving as City of Las Vegas Deputy Director and Transportation Manager.

Now, she's doing the work to put the program into place -- and finding federal funds to help pay for it.

"The goal of the Vision Zero Action Plan is to ELIMINATE fatalities and serious injuries for all modes of transportation by the year 2050," according to Paskey's presentation on Wednesday. So far, Las Vegas has secured more than $10.5 million in safety-specific grant funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The city has also reduced the speed limit in three corridors and performed seven "school walk" audits. As a result of those audits, 86 improvements have already been made.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Henderson police said they were on the scene of a possible barricade situation after a report of "suspicious circumstances."

According to the Henderson Police Department, on Jan. 4 at around 8:15 a.m., police were called to the 400 block of Chateau Drive "in reference to suspicious circumstances."

HPD said SWAT and crisis negotiators were on the scene. Two people were detained and taken into custody, police said, but one person is still outstanding and could be barricaded inside a residence.

Police ask that the public avoid the area, as the scene is still active.

This is an ongoing investigation.

Man who attacked Las Vegas judge skips court, could get bail https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/man-who-attacked-las-vegas-judge-skips-court-could-get-bail/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 19:27:01 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710705 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The man who attacked a judge in a Las Vegas courtroom on Wednesday refused to show up to court Thursday and remains in jail.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus' courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison time, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.

On Thursday, Redden refused to show up for his initial appearance in the same building where the attack happened the day before.

The Clark County District Attorney's office requested Redden be held without bail. However, Pro-Tem Judge Lauren Diefenbach said that she was not comfortable arguing about bail without Redden present. Bail remained at $54,000.

In the state of Nevada, a defendant can work with a bail bond company to post 15% of the bail amount. In Redden's case, this would be $8,100. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson disagreed with Diefenbach's decision.

"I'm disappointed," Wolfson said. "We asked for a no-bail setting. We asked that he be detained because we believe that he is a danger to the community," Wolfson said. "The world has seen what happened yesterday and this person's behavior in court and I've almost seen nothing else like this, so we believe he is an extreme danger to the community."

On Wednesday, a court spokesperson said that security protocols would be reviewed.

Redden, who appeared in court with his mother, has three felony convictions and nine misdemeanor convictions on his record, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

Holthus was about to deny Redden’s probation request when Redden ran up to her, jumped over the bench, and attacked her, a video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators showed. Several other people then fought with Redden before throwing him to the ground.

A witness who was in the courtroom on Wednesday described the attack to 8 News Now Investigators one day later.

"It was just a total chaotic commotion," Daniel Martin expressed. "Honestly I was super surprised like I've never seen anything like that in my whole life, that looked like something out of the NFL or something like that."

Martin said he wanted to help the judge, but his public defender told him to stay back.

"I was in conflict cause as a natural man you want to protect a woman," Martin added.

Redden was booked into the Clark County jail on new charges of battery and battery on a protected person. One count of the battery-on-a-protected-person charge indicated the victim was “substantially harmed.”

A court spokesperson said Holthus’ injuries were “being monitored.” A marshal was taken to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson said.

Redden was due in court again on Jan. 9.

Update: Multiple gunshot victims at Perry High School, gunman is dead https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/live-coverage-multiple-gunshot-victims-at-perry-high-school-sheriff-says-threat-is-over/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 16:31:20 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710343 PERRY, Iowa -- Multiple people were shot Thursday morning at Perry High School according to Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante.

Law enforcement was notified about an active shooter at the school at 7:37 a.m. When emergency responders arrived on the scene just seven minutes later they found multiple gunshot victims.

At a news conference shortly after 10:00 a.m., Sheriff Infante said it's unclear how many victims were shot and the extent of their injuries at this time, but the threat is over and there is no danger to the public. Another news conference has been scheduled for 3:00 p.m. to release updated information about the shooting.

NBC News is reporting the shooter is believed to be dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and may have been a student.

At least three others were injured including two students and an administrator. WHO 13 has learned that the injured administrator was longtime high school principal Dan Marburger.

WHO 13's Lindsey Burrell spoke with a representative for UnityPoint Health in Des Moines and confirmed they are treating two victims with gunshot wounds at Methodist Medical Center.

Thursday was the first day back for students from the winter break and classes had not yet started for the day so there were fewer students and staff in the school at the time of the shooting, said Sheriff Infante.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the school after being notified of the active shooter situation.

WHO 13 Photographer Jack Johnson was on the scene outside the school near 1200 18th Street where he said police and Iowa State Troopers blocked off the streets surrounding the school. He has seen several ambulances entering and leaving the school.

Multiple air ambulances were also spotted arriving and leaving the area.

Our photographer also witnessed some students have tearful reunions with parents near the area of the high school.

The Perry Community School District has about 1,785 students. Perry is located about 40 minutes northwest of Des Moines.

This is a developing story and we'll bring you more information as it becomes available.

Winter weather, fresh snow expected to draw skiers, snowboarders to mountains near Las Vegas https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/winter-weather-fresh-snow-expected-to-draw-skiers-snowboarders-to-mountains-near-las-vegas/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 15:44:55 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710329 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A winter storm dropped more than a foot of snow on some of the mountains around the Las Vegas valley Wednesday which will likely beckon more skiers and snowboarders to Lee Canyon in the coming days.

According to the National Weather Service, Lee Canyon at 8,600 feet received 16 inches of fresh snow in a 24-hour period bringing the season total to 20.5 inches.

Lee Canyon said Thursday would be “the first official powder day of 2024.” The resort will open the Bluebird quad chair at 9 a.m., giving skiers and snowboarders access to the intermediate and advanced trails. You can get more information on tickets and conditions at this link.

The snowfall kept Clark County Public Works crews busy plowing roads most of the day so drivers wouldn't get stuck. Snow attracts many visitors to the Spring Mountains and sometimes results in limited entry to State Routes 156 and 157. You can check this link for the latest information. At times, 4-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, or chains are required.

'It's sad that it happens,' Retired Las Vegas judge says courtroom attacks are not far-fetched https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/its-sad-that-it-happens-retired-las-vegas-judge-says-courtroom-attacks-are-not-far-fetched/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 06:24:26 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710143 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The wild viralness of video – first reported and posted by the 8 News Now Investigators -- of a man catapulting the bench in a Clark County courtroom and pouncing on the judge presiding over his case, indicates it's a sight not many people have ever seen.

But for those who have donned the black robe for any length of time, the notion of such an attack is not so far-fetched.

"It's sad that it happens," William "Bill" Kephart, a retired Clark County judge, said Wednesday, a few hours after the attack. "But it happens."

Kephart was a judge for 10 years, first for four years in Las Vegas Justice Court and then in the Eighth Judicial District Court for the next six. His courtroom was just down the hall from his colleague's, Judge Mary Kay Holthus, a former prosecutor and current District Court Judge. Holthus on Wednesday was attacked by a defendant she was sentencing in her courtroom, Deobra Redden, 30.

"You can see people in that courtroom care about her and want to make sure that she's safe," Kephart said, referring to Holthus' courtroom clerk who can be seen on the video attempting to beat Redden into submission. A courtroom marshal and others also stepped in to free Holthus from Redden's clutches.

Redden's violent outburst is a reminder to judges like Kephart of how serious the stakes inside a courtroom are. Kephart told the 8 News Now Investigators that given those stakes – and the tremendous volume of litigants and defendants who have business inside the Regional Justice Center –  it's surprising there aren't more episodes of this type. Moreover, he says, some judges may be swayed by the stakes of some of the criminal sentences they issue or decisions they make in multi-million-or-billon-dollar civil cases.

"I think there's a few people that might be on the bench that recognize those threats... in a sense that it influences their decisions," Kephart said. "And, Mary Kay's not like that."

Holthus did not answer a phone call made to her cell phone Wednesday evening. That call went directly to voicemail. Similarly, a text message sent to her cell phone went unanswered.

Another retired Clark County judge who spoke with the 8 News Now Investigators indicated that, in her experience on the bench,  criminal defendants are more likely to turn on their own attorney than on the judge.

'Somebody call 911,' Full video shows Las Vegas courtroom chaos as man attacks judge https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/somebody-call-911-full-video-shows-las-vegas-courtroom-chaos/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 05:34:19 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710106 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators shows several minutes of chaos after a man jumped a Clark County judge's bench, attacking her.

Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing Wednesday on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, records said.

Holthus was sitting behind the bench when Redden ran up to her, jumped over the bench and attacked her, video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators showed. Several other people then fought with Redden before throwing him to the ground. An alarm also sounded for several minutes alerting others to the incident.

Several court employees and a marshal then grabbed Redden as Holthus lay under the bench, the video shows.

"Where's Mary Kay?" one person in the video says as she calls for a marshal to call 911. Several people in the courtroom continue to scream and yell in the ensuing minutes.

A marshal also appears to have a large gash on his forehead.

"Is she talking?" a court employee asks as Holthus lies in the floor. Holthus appears to ask if her staff is OK, before saying Redden smashed her head against the wall. Several minutes later, she stands up and walks out of the room.

A court spokesperson said Holthus’ injuries were “being monitored.” A marshal was taken to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson said.

Video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators shows several minutes of chaos after a man jumped a judge's bench, attacking her. (KLAS)

Redden was previously in front of Holthus on charges of malicious destruction of property. Records show he served prison time on a domestic battery charge for a year, starting in 2021. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months. A board granted Redden parole in 2022.

During Wednesday’s court appearance, Redden’s attorney asked Holthus to sentence his client to probation. The prosecutors asked Holthus to sentence Redden to 19-48 months in prison.

“Basically, I would like to tell the courts and everyone here, based on my criminal history, I feel that like I shouldn’t be sent to prison for a sentence time,” Redden told Holthus before the attack.

“Have you looked at your criminal history?” she asked him.

“I looked at it – I just looked at it,” Redden said.

“You lived it, I suppose,” Holthus said. “Three felonies, a [gross misdemeanor], nine misdemeanors, multiple [domestic violence convictions], you got a lot going on, sir.”

“I’m in a better place in my mind, in my mental health, I have a support system, I just got hired a Teamster for the union, making $20 an hour.,” Redden said. “The reason behind every single domestic violence, I’ve been dealing with mental health, and I didn’t know that I was dealing with mental health and they put me in mental health court and I still didn’t know that I had mental health problem.”

Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. (KLAS)

Redden appeared to accept the fact Holthus appeared to weigh on his prior convictions in her determination.

“I feel like I shouldn’t be sent to prison, but if it’s appropriate, then you have to do what you have to do,” Redden said.

Redden was booked into the Clark County jail on new charges of battery and battery on a protected person. One count of the battery-on-a-protected-person charge indicated the victim was “substantially harmed.” He was due in court on the new charges at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Clark County courtrooms are often staffed by one marshal and if in-custody defendants are present, at least one corrections officer.

Voters elected Holthus to the bench in 2018. She previously worked for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office. She often hears domestic violence and sex assault cases.

Redden, who appeared in court with his mother, has three felony convictions and nine misdemeanor convictions on his record, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

In 2012, Redden was convicted of assault causing bodily injury to a family member. A judge sentenced him to 45 days in jail and a time, documents said.

In 2013, Redden was convicted three times for domestic battery, documents said. He was ordered to attend anger management classes, spend two months in jail and pay a fine in the three cases.

In 2014, Redden was convicted for attempted theft, documents said. A judge sentenced him to probation, which he violated several times. Redden then entered a mental health court program.

While on probation, Redden was twice convicted of domestic battery, tampered with his alcohol monitoring bracelet and violated other terms, documents said.

He was also charged with kicking a police officer in the knee.

Also, during his probation in 2018, Redden was convicted of battery with substantial bodily harm. In that case, he bit a woman and broke the windows of a man’s car with a rock, documents said. Again, a judge sentenced Redden to probation. A judge honorably discharged him from probation in 2020 and 2021.

In 2021, Redden was convicted again for domestic battery. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months. A board granted Redden parole in 2022.

Also in 2021, police charged Redden with attempted home invasion and destroying the property of another person, documents said. It was unclear if Redden’s arrest for these charges happened before he was remanded into custody.

In January 2023, Redden appeared before Holthus on the 2021 charges. Redden pleaded guilty and Holthus released him without having to pay bail. That February, Holthus sentenced Redden to a year of probation, records said. Redden violated his probation in October, and Holthus ordered him to serve 106 days in jail. It was unclear why Redden was released before the Jan. 3 incident or if he even served any of the jail time.

On April 23, Redden “[threatened] to bust the kneecaps” of another man with a baseball bat, “resulting in substantial bodily harm,” documents said.

In May, a different judge ordered Redden to undergo a competency determination, records said. Redden was then committed to a state behavioral facility. A judge then found Redden competent in October.

Redden pleaded guilty in November. Judge Holthus issued a bench warrant for his arrest in December after he missed a court appearance.

One count of the battery-on-a-protected-person charge indicated the victim was "substantially harmed." He was due in court on the new charges at 9 a.m. Thursday.

A court spokesperson said Holthus’ injuries were “being monitored.” A marshal was taken to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson said.

Henderson roundabout drives residents' concerns https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/henderson-roundabout-drives-residents-concerns/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 04:29:37 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710043 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - Four-way stops and signals are getting the backseat as the City of Henderson makes roundabouts a priority, but one traffic circle is causing confusion.

At the intersection of Via Inspirada and Bicentennial Parkway Henderson residents expressed concern as drivers failed to follow the signage before entering the “dogbone” roundabout.

Henderson resident Amariah Givens pointed out some of the problem areas at the two-lane roundabout noting that some incoming traffic fails to yield.

“It's just hard to see if someone is going to rush through,” Givens said. “[Drivers] need to wait their turn.”

An online post from the Inspirada Neighborhood Facebook page highlighted that issue. Garner Miller made a public service announcement on the page in December of 2023 saying, “If you want to go straight and continue on Via Inspirada South, you need to be in the right lane.”

Roundabout traffic near The Shops at Inspirada, a commercial complex at the intersection, is expected to see an uptick after the construction of Inspirada Station, according to a 2023 impact assessment report paid for by Station Casinos.

The report projects that approximately 1,685 trips will be taken at peak evening hours to and from Inspirada Casino & Resort.

The City of Henderson responded to 8 News Now questions about the “dogbone” roundabout stating, “Roundabouts are proven to be much safer than four-way stops and signals. Motorists are forced to slow down as lanes converge on a roundabout, the severity of crashes decreases and pedestrian safety increases.”

The written statement from the City of Henderson listed safety as a chief priority for roadway users and touted their focus on being a “roundabout-first community.”

Hank Humpky, a Henderson resident, isn’t sold on folding the roundabout into his commute to The M Resort Spa Casino.

“I just try to avoid it,” Humpky said.

8 News Now asked Humpky what he believed to be to blame for the confusion and lack of heeding the posted signage at the roundabout.

“It’s just foolishness to me," he added.
