Police identified Elijah Candelaria, 18, as the suspect in the stabbing. He was arrested Saturday and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. Candelaria faces a charge of open murder.

The incident occurred on Dec. 13 at approximately 9:48 p.m. when dispatchers received a report of a man on the ground in front of a home in the 8300 block of Mulcahy Avenue near Alta and Durango drives.

When Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived, they found that the man had been stabbed. The unidentified man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

LVMPD detectives determined that the man had been in a fight with Candelaria before he was stabbed. Investigators say Candelaria ran away before officers arrived.

Dad of special needs student allegedly beaten by Las Vegas school bus driver breaks silence https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/dad-of-special-needs-student-allegedly-beaten-by-las-vegas-school-bus-driver-breaks-silence/ Sun, 07 Jan 2024 01:27:26 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1713076 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Records show Clark County prosecutors are seeking to indict a former school bus driver accused of assaulting a student with autism.

The child’s father, William Becker, said his 10-year-old son has experienced a downward spiral since the incident, which has kept him out of the classroom for more than a year.

“It's just real hard for him. He just doesn't know what to do with himself any more,” Becker said.

Vincent Brown can't speak for himself, he is considered non-verbal.

“His routine and structure [are] completely broken and for autistic children, it's just not a good thing,” Becker said.

Vincent was in fourth grade when he was allegedly attacked on his way to Variety School in November of 2022.

Variety School (KLAS)

Officers with the Clark County School District Police Department arrested Dorys Tovar in December of that year on one count of child abuse.

According to court documents, Tovar struck Brown in the face, body, limbs, torso, and extremities.

“He rages out, he's been out of school for a year now,” Becker said. “He had got the allegations of abuse backed up by video and a couple of statements by other people.”

Online court records show Tovar’s case was dismissed in Las Vegas Justice Court in October of 2023, and prosecutors are now pursuing a grand jury indictment.

“He's a beautiful child, he's smart. Just a good kid. He just needs the guidance and help,” Beker said.

Vincent Brown (KLAS)

Brown’s family is against him riding a school bus or going back to Variety. Becker said he wants his son to go to a school near their home.

His parents hope that a federal lawsuit they filed against the Clark County School District not only helps Brown but brings changes.

“CCSD should probably have a better screening process for people to deal with these types of children because there are so many autistic children out there,” Becker said.

CCSD has a policy of not commenting on pending litigation.

Here is a link to a GoFundMe Brown’s family started to raise money for a private tutor.

New video shows man charging at Las Vegas judge before attack https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/new-video-shows-man-charging-at-las-vegas-judge-before-attack/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 01:20:23 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712431 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- New video the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Friday shows a man jumping a table and charging at a Las Vegas judge before attacking her and several staff.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.

The new video shows a different angle than in the widely shared video Wednesday. In the new video, Holthus' marshal, Shane Brandon, appears to prepare to handcuff Redden, which Redden sees. He then jumps over a table and runs toward Holthus' bench.

After leaping over the bench, Redden allegedly slammed Holthus’ head against a wall, struck her once on the head, and pulled some hair out of her head, documents said. She then hid under her desk “balled up covering her face.” The ensuing struggle lasted several minutes.

Brandon received 25 stitches to a gash on his face, documents said. He also dislocated his shoulder.

Redden also hit and punched a corrections officer who was present in the courtroom, documents said. Holthus’ law clerk, Michael Lasso, was cut several times on his hand in the melee.

After the attack, in a holding cell near the courtroom, Redden reportedly told an officer, “Judge has it out for me,” “Judge is evil,” “I’m sorry you guys had to see that,” documents said. Another officer said Redden asked him if what he did was wrong.

Redden also told corrections officers he had a bad day and tried to kill her, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators first obtained Thursday.

In a filing Friday, Holthus ordered officers to bring Redden to court “by any and all means necessary" for the interrupted hearing's continuance Monday, the 8 News Now Investigators first reported. Redden could still appear in court via teleconference from jail.

Redden faced 13 charges in connection with Wednesday’s attack in a new court case. A Las Vegas Justice Court judge, not Holthus, will hear bail arguments in that case Tuesday.

As the 8 News Now Investigators reported Wednesday, Redden was previously in front of Holthus on charges of malicious destruction of property. Holthus granted him probation in that case. Records show he served prison time on a domestic battery charge for a year, starting in 2021. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months.

Las Vegas judge orders attacker back to court 'by any and all means necessary' https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/las-vegas-judge-orders-attacker-back-to-court-by-any-and-all-means-necessary/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:41:34 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712154 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Las Vegas judge attacked in court Wednesday has ordered the man who lunged over her bench, injuring her and several staff, to appear before her Monday “by any and all means necessary,” court documents said.

Holthus was about to deny Redden’s probation request when Redden ran up to her, jumped over the bench, and attacked her, video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators showed. Several other people then fought with Redden before throwing him to the ground.

After leaping over the bench, Redden allegedly slammed Holthus’ head against a wall, struck her once on the head, and pulled some hair out of her head, documents said. She then hid under her desk “balled up covering her face.” The ensuing struggle lasted several minutes.

Holthus’ marshal, identified as Shane Brandon, received 25 stitches to a gash on his face, documents said. Brandon was preparing to handcuff Redden at the time.

While at the Clark County Detention Center, Redden allegedly spit in a corrections officer’s face, police said. Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said Holthus returned to work Thursday.

Holthus was also working Friday, as indicated by the filing of new documents in the initial attempted battery case. The filing Friday ordered officers to bring Redden to court "by any and all means necessary." Redden could still appear in court via teleconference from jail.

Redden faced 13 charges in connection with Wednesday's attack in a new court case. A Las Vegas Justice Court judge, not Holthus, will hear bail arguments in that case Tuesday.

Records show he served prison time on a domestic battery charge for a year, starting in 2021. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months. A board granted Redden parole in 2022.

‘That’s how events go in Las Vegas,’ which businesses won, lost during F1 Las Vegas weekend? https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/thats-how-events-go-in-las-vegas-which-businesses-won-lost-during-f1-las-vegas-weekend/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 02:02:28 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712471 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - As Formula One has come and gone, some Las Vegas Valley businesses say they are still recovering from a weekend of losses while others report the race as their highest-grossing weekend ever.

Simran Singh has a constant reminder of the half-year construction project, which converted nearly four miles of public road into a world-class racetrack, outside her front door. Her husband and her own Las Vegas Souvenirs & Gifts, located directly next to a 750-foot-long temporary vehicular bridge built on Flamingo Road over Koval Lane that is still there.

“They’re supposed to take it down because look how slow it is,” Singh said outside her store Friday morning, referencing a nearly empty storefront as cars flew over the bridge and past her business. “It wasn’t easy. We didn’t get any business at all.”

The temporary vehicle bridge on Flamingo Road over Koval Lane continues to be the focus of a undergo a traffic study by Clark County Public Works. (KLAS)

The potential of new customers stopping into the giftshop en route to their assigned F1 grandstand seat was enough to keep the Singh’s excitement high. However, she said the excitement faded when the track fencing was installed directly in front of them making it a hassle for customers, primarily from the nearby Strip, to access them.

Those fences may be gone nearly two months later, but recovery is ongoing with the Flamingo Bridge still standing.

“They pass the bridge and go all the way down,” Singh said. “That's the kind of business that we're losing. That's not supposed to be happening.”

It’s a story that Andrew Woods, director of UNLV’s Center for Business and Economic Research, knows well: which businesses won and which lost during Formula One?

“It seems like a little bit of a tale of two different cities in terms of success or not,” Woods said during a virtual interview.

MGM Resorts reported the three-day racing event as its highest-grossing weekend ever while dealers at Wynn Resorts reportedly split $1 million in tips over those three days. It’s part of the $1.37 billion casinos won in November 2023 statewide. That number comes from the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s most recent report, which shows the Strip hit its second-highest grossing month ever: $820,99,082. That’s 22.6 percent, or $151,478,070, more than revenue reported during November 2022.

However, as Woods acknowledged, that success was largely focused on the Strip. Downtown Las Vegas lost nearly $1.6 million in November 2023 compared to November 2022, per the report.

“Other parts of town were very empty,” Woods said. “Sometimes, that’s how events go in Las Vegas, right? There are certain events that some properties benefit off of and others may not.”

Beyond the Flamingo bridge, F1 immediately reported after racing weekend that it also left behind $1.2 billion in economic impact. The official and certified amount is not expected from Clark County until later in January.

The racing giant also left behind nearly four miles of upgraded and repaved roads. But, as Clark County Commission Chair Tick Segerblom told 8 News Now on Thursday, their $40 million ask for the county to reimburse them may be left in the dust.

“If we want to start talking about dollars and cents, let's look at what the county has expended to make that race happen. Let's look at what the citizens of Las Vegas have lost to make that race happen,” Segerblom said, speaking of ongoing negotiations with F1 that have not seen “any progress” in recent weeks. “Maybe they should be paying us money. They make money off our bridges. They make money everywhere.”

While Las Vegas continues to await the official economic scope F1 left behind, businesses such as Singh’s are bracing for a potential of nine more years of impacts as they recover from the first year.

“Do you guys think you’ll be able to survive another 10 years of this race?” 8 News Now Reporter Ryan Matthey asked. “No, not at all,” Singh said, staring at the nearby bridge potential customers could use to take their business elsewhere.

While F1 has another two years in its contract with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to race annually down the Strip, Clark County Commissioners have designated it an annual event for another nine years.

Multi-family building partially collapses in east Las Vegas, displaces 14 people https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/multi-family-building-partially-collapses-in-east-las-vegas-displaces-14-people/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 23:12:29 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712278 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A building in east Las Vegas partially collapsed Friday afternoon, leaving 14 people displaced.

The Clark County Fire Department responded to reports of a roof collapse shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of Issac Avenue.

CCFD arrived within six minutes after the incident was reported to find a two-story apartment building with a partially collapsed roof which was blocking access to the front door entrances.

Five residents could not get out due to a blocked entrance. CCFD entered through windows on the opposite side of the building to assist five people out of the windows and down the ladders. The Red Cross originally reported in a news release that "emergency responders tell us one person suffered a severe injury," but the Clark County Fire Department, in a separate release, said, "There were no injuries reported by any occupants on scene."

Emergency responders said the collapse was not caused by a fire, but was likely because of the age of the building. According to a listing for the building on Zillow, it was built in 1983.

The Red Cross said they are working with those affected to provide immediate help for food and housing, as well as necessities like medication, glasses, and comfort items.

"I feel extreme compassion for these people," Nikki Morachnick, the disaster action team coordinator and volunteer from the Red Cross of Southern Nevada. Morachnick said many of the displaced tenants have no resources and the Red Cross has enough budget to situate them for up to a few days.

"It's a very traumatic experience" for the tenants, she said. "And they were very upset. And everyone's very concerned about where they're going to be living the next few months."

Morachnick said the CCFD told her the building was condemned.

That forced out the tenants in all four units in the building. Most of the damage and debris seemed to stem from the portion of the roof hanging over the two upstairs balconies.

Katherine Lusk, a downstairs tenant, was home when she heard what happened.

"It just fell over," Lusk said. "I was sitting in the living room and it was a huge crash."

Lusk was in the process of moving her personal effects out of her apartment within a few hours of the collapse.

"I can't believe this happened," she said.

CCFD was assisted by the North Las Vegas Fire Department and in total two engines, one truck, one battalion chief, and one EMS supervisor responded (14 personnel). CCFD cleared the scene at 2:55 PM.

UNLV's Beam Hall to remain closed through spring semester https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/unlvs-beam-hall-to-remain-closed-through-spring-semester/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 02:31:29 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712529 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - UNLV's Beam Hall is expected to remain closed to the public for the spring semester following the campus shooting in December, according to the university's president Keith Whitfield.

The announcement was made on Friday as part of an update on the university's website.

Students, faculty, and staff will return to campus for the spring semester on Jan. 16 more than a month after the shooting.

On Dec. 6, 2023, Professor Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, of Henderson; Associate Professor Naoko Takemaru, 69, of Las Vegas, 69; and Assistant Professor Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, of Las Vegas, were killed during the shooting.

"Even though we continue to make progress on building repairs in Beam Hall, we also understand the intense emotional trauma that exists for our colleagues who work in the building, and for students still recovering from the impact of the Dec. 6 tragedy and its aftermath. So in consultation with faculty, staff, and leadership in the Lee Business School and College of Liberal Arts, and with our Facilities and Business Affairs teams, Provost Heavey and I have made the decision to keep Beam Hall closed to the public for the spring semester," Whitfield stated online.

All classes previously scheduled for Beam Hall this spring have been reassigned to other classrooms on campus or to remote instruction.

Faculty and staff will have the option of working in their offices, working remotely, or using hoteling spaces in other buildings but Beam Hall will remain locked and accessible only to occupants and their personal guests for the semester.  Other services and programming typically in Beam Hall will be relocated for the semester.

"It was good that they expanded," local Monica Liriano said.

"We are anticipating opening our two upper chairs and our new grand opening of the Ponderosa chair lift," said Lee Canyon marketing director Jim Seely.

With 16 inches of snowfall, Friday made for a busy day at Lee Canyon and after a tumultuous fall in which weather caused many problems for people who live on and around the mountain. Seely says it feels good to be back.

"All of a sudden, tropical storm Hilary comes in and did what it did, so that really halted our momentum up here. But we were able to get through it and so far it's been a successful winter season," Seely said.

For families, Seely shared that the resort just debuted a new pass for kids that allows them to ski and snowboard for free.

4 from Las Vegas charged in Jan. 6 investigations, here's where their cases stand https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/4-from-las-vegas-charged-in-jan-6-investigations-heres-where-their-cases-stand/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 21:15:09 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712079 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- In the three years since the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S Capitol, two men with Las Vegas ties have been imprisoned, one is awaiting a trial and one is awaiting sentencing.

The man deemed the “Spider Nazi,” who climbed on the exterior of the U.S. Capitol building and then went inside through a broken window most-recently pleaded guilty.

After his arrest in December 2022, Brandon Dillard, 40, of Las Vegas, initially faced charges of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a Capitol Building; and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol Building, documents said.

In November, Dillard agreed to plead guilty to a charge of disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, documents said. The charge faces a prison sentence of a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Brandon Dillard, of Las Vegas, is accused of entering the U.S. Capitol through this broken window. (KLAS)

In January 2021, a person uploaded a 90-minute video of the insurrection to an FBI database, documents said. The video includes a person, wearing a spider web-hooded sweatshirt, climbing down an exterior Capitol wall. The same person then entered the Capitol building through a broken window, documents said.

Online comments gave the person seen climbing on the building the moniker “#SpiderNazi,” documents said.

Investigators reviewed more videos, finding the same man in videos with his face exposed, they said. The FBI then compared the man in the video to Dillard’s Nevada driver’s license photo, finding “a strong resemblance,” they wrote in court documents. The FBI also obtained data from Dillard’s phone carrier, which showed his phone in the area of the Capitol on Jan. 6, they said.

Travel records also showed Dillard traveled from Las Vegas to the Washington Area on Jan. 5 and returned to Las Vegas on Jan. 8.

Two other men with Las Vegas ties were already serving prison sentences for their roles on Jan. 6.

Ronald “Ronnie” Sandlin, who was living in Las Vegas, began serving a 63-month prison sentence in December 2022. Nathaniel “Nate” DeGrave, also of Las Vegas, started his sentence last summer.

On the day of the riot, DeGrave, Sandlin, and a third man, Josiah Colt, of Idaho, met in a hotel room in Maryland and later entered the Capitol. Prosecutors said DeGrave assaulted at least two U.S. Capitol Police officers and was armed with bear spray, according to documents.

The 8 News Now Investigators interviewed both DeGrave and Sandlin from jail in 2021. Inside the Capitol, Sandlin attempted to rip off an officer’s helmet before reaching the U.S. Senate Chamber. While leaving the building, Sandlin took an oil painting off a wall before leaving it behind, prosecutors said.

The FBI arrested Ronald “Ronnie” Sandlin outside of Nathan “Nate” DeGrave’s apartment near the Las Vegas Strip on Jan. 29, 2021. (KLAS)

Sandlin was also seen on video smoking weed inside the building. He is heard on the video saying, “People are smoking weed in here. Thank you, patriot. We made history in here,” according to court documents.

In the months after Jan. 6, DeGrave raised more than $120,000 where he called himself “a political prisoner,” prosecutors said.

Last March, the FBI arrested Bradley Nelson, a North Las Vegas truck driver, for allegedly entering the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and then tweeting about it, saying in part, “I was in the capital [sic]… and all hell broke loose,” documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained said.

Nelson, who the FBI said is a commercial truck driver, drove his truck from southern Nevada to Washington, D.C. in January 2021, and parked it at an inspection station, they said.

Bradley Nelson as seen in various surveillance images on Jan. 6, 2021, according to prosecutors. (KLAS)

The FBI later identified Nelson from his Nevada driver’s license and videos of the insurrection. Federal investigators also said Nelson’s cell phone was in the area, including inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Nelson has pleaded not guilty and remained out of custody pending trial.

Last April, a judge sentenced a fifth man, Josiah Kenyon, of Winnemucca, to six years in prison for his involvement. Kenyon attacked officers and caused more than $40,000 in damage.

Kenyon was seen in and around the building wearing a “Nightmare Before Christmas” Jack Skellington costume, documents said. While outside the building, he tried to break a window with his fist before using a flagpole to hit it.

A judge scheduled Dillard’s sentencing for Feb. 8. He remained out of custody.

Seven people died in the riot or in the immediate days after, including an officer for the Capitol police, the Jan. 6 committee found.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith to oversee the department’s investigations into the former president and the lead-up to the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection.

The FBI has arrested more 1,200 people for crimes related to Jan. 6, the department said. More than 450 people face charges of assaulting or impeding law enforcement. As of Friday, the longest Jan. 6-related sentence a judge has imposed is 14 years for a man who threw a chair at a line of officers. Housing crisis, rising rents fuel need for assistance programs https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/housing-crisis-rising-rents-fuel-need-for-assistance-programs/ Sat, 06 Jan 2024 02:06:00 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712447 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Potential homebuyers in Nevada and nationwide are feeling the pinch with rising home costs since 2022.

Several federal, state and local resource groups gathered at the Desert Breeze Community Center Friday morning to highlight the new and existing programs to help. The resources ranged from financial and housing to food security and utility bill assistance.

The housing forum was organized largely by Congresswoman Susie Lee, who began the address by saying the state is in a housing crisis and it is all hands on deck to help.

"We have an 84,000-unit deficit that literally means we have to build more," Lee said.

One group building more is Nevada HAND, a nonprofit, affordable housing developer.

Marissa Shoop of Nevada HAND. (KLAS)

Marissa Shoop, the director of resident services, highlighted an upcoming senior housing project, and others.

"Nevada HAND is proud to have about 2,000 units in the pipeline to serve Southern Nevada," Shoop said. "But we know it is a drop in the bucket of the need Southern Nevada has."

The National Low-income Housing Coalition confirms a rental shortage across Nevada. Many households spend more than half their income on housing.

Clark County's most-used social service programs include the Fixed Income CHAP for rental and utility help.

Several federal, state, and local agencies gathered Friday morning to discuss the housing crisis and solutions offered for Southern Nevadans. (Lauren Negrete/KLAS)

Senior Family Service Specialist Alyssa Antos explained the program is catered to households that are on a fixed income, have a rent increase and are having a hard time making rent, and are facing eviction.

Their Eviction Prevention program is also frequently used, which can help pay past due and future rent for up to a year.

As for why these are needed, Antos points to trends like post-pandemic hardships and rising rents.

"Especially since COVID, rent has increased, and people can't keep up with the demand," Antos said.

Seniors can take advantage of United Way of Southern Nevada's Project REACH which will pay one utility bill once a year up to $300.

The Nevada homeowner assistance fund has loan and unemployment mortgage assistance programs that can help families up to $65,000.

And The Just One Project hit the podium to speak on their wide offering. Programs include food, housing and youth services.

These and other agencies are stepping up to answer the call.

Reno arsonist seen fleeing deadly fire with gas can sentenced to life without parole https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/reno-arsonist-seen-fleeing-deadly-fire-with-gas-can-sentenced-to-life-without-parole/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 23:59:28 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1712358 RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada man who was spotted running from a burning Reno apartment building with a gas can in his hand has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to two murder charges in the 2020 fire.

Two women died and 13 people were injured, some while jumping from second-floor windows to escape the pre-dawn flames that destroyed the eight-unit apartment complex southeast of downtown on July 20, 2020.

Brian Bandy, 35, of Sun Valley pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the deaths of Katherine White, 70, and Diana Engstrom, 51. They died of smoke inhalation inside their apartments.

Washoe District Judge Kathleen Sigurdson sentenced Bandy on Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A man who saw Bandy running with the gas can and jump into a car called 911 then followed him until police were able to initiate a traffic stop and take him into custody, prosecutors said. Police said an investigation revealed Bandy owed money to someone living in the apartment complex and had argued with that person in the weeks before the fire.

Investigators said Bandy poured gasoline on wooden steps outside one of the apartments and lit it on fire. By the time firefighters arrived about 5:30 a.m., the building was already engulfed in flames and thick black smoke.

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks said the eight families who lived at the complex on Broadway Boulevard lost their life's possessions. He praised the witness who called police and followed Bandy as he fled.

“His selfless acts are highly commendable and helped bring this defendant to justice,” Hicks said in a statement Friday.

According to a release, the Golden Knights partnered with America's VetDogs to co-raise a future service dog for a United States veteran or first responder with disabilities.

America's VetDogs is a national nonprofit that helps provide specially trained service dogs to veterans, first responders, and active-duty service members with disabilities at no cost to them.

“The Knights’ commitment to excellence extends beyond the ice, as they join us in raising a future service dog for a veteran or first responder with disabilities," John Miller, president and CEO of America’s VetDogs, said. "This unique partnership symbolizes our shared values of dedication, teamwork, and a profound commitment to support those who have selflessly served our nation.”

The puppy, a seven-week-old yellow Labrador retriever, will join the team in the coming weeks and spend 16 to 18 months going through basic training while socializing with the players, staff, and fans.

The release said the pup will attend select events at T-Mobile Arena and other places to expose him to various environments. He will also be known to frequent the Knights front office.

We hope our fans are as excited to meet the new pup as our players and staff are.”

But... he needs a name. And that's where you come in!

If you have a suggestion for a name for the new pup, the Golden Knights created an online submission form. The form includes an option to opt-in to "VGK Pup Initiatives," such as meetups, retail items, and more.

Man in Las Vegas courtroom attack video says he had bad day, tried to kill judge https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/man-in-las-vegas-courtroom-attack-says-he-had-bad-day-tried-to-kill-judge-documents/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 01:39:52 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711008 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The man who attacked a Las Vegas judge as she was sentencing him Wednesday told corrections officers he had a bad day and tried to kill her, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison time, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.

Holthus was about to deny Redden’s probation request when Redden ran up to her, jumped over the bench, and attacked her, video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators showed. Several other people then fought with Redden before throwing him to the ground. The ensuing struggle lasted several minutes.

Holthus' marshal, identified as Shane Brandon, received 25 stitches to a gash on his face, documents said. Brandon was preparing to handcuff Redden at the time. He also dislocated his shoulder.

After leaping over the bench, Redden allegedly slammed Holthus' head against a wall, struck her once on the head, and pulled some hair out of her head, documents said. She then hid under her desk "balled up covering her face."

Holthus described Redden "as being 'big, strong and angry,'" police said. Medical personnel treated her in the justice center. A family member later brought her to a hospital due to her continued pain.

Redden also hit and punched a corrections officer who was present in the courtroom, documents said. Holthus' law clerk, Michael Lasso, was cut several times on his hand in the melee.

Photos showed a bloody scene, with blood on Holthus' bench and on documents scattered in the area.

Daniel Martin, a witness who was in the courtroom, described the attack to the 8 News Now Investigators.

"It was just a total chaotic commotion," Martin said. "Honestly, I was super surprised like I've never seen anything like that in my whole life, that looked like something out of the NFL or something like that."

Martin said he wanted to help the judge, but his public defender told him to stay back.

"I was in conflict cause as a natural man you want to protect a woman," Martin said.

After the attack, in a holding cell near the courtroom, Redden reportedly told an officer, "Judge has it out for me," "Judge is evil," "I'm sorry you guys had to see that," documents said. Another officer said Redden asked him if what he did was wrong.

A Hazmat crew then cleaned the courtroom, police said.

While at CCDC, Redden allegedly spit in a corrections officer's face, police said.

Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said Holthus returned to work Thursday.

Also on Thursday, Redden refused to show up for his initial appearance in the same building where the attack happened the day before. He was scheduled to return to court on Jan. 9.

Holthus was scheduled to continue the sentencing hearing on her case on Monday, Jan. 8. The case is unrelated to the new charges related to the Jan. 3 incident.

Redden faced new charges as of Thursday:

  • Coercion w/force or threat of force
  • Extortion
  • Intimidate public officers/others, with the use of force
  • Disregard the safety of person/property
  • Battery by prisoner, probationer, or parolee
  • Unlaw act to excrete/fluid by a prisoner in a confined area
  • Battery on a protected person

Redden was previously in front of Holthus on charges of malicious destruction of property. Records show he served prison time on a domestic battery charge for a year, starting in 2021. In that case, a different judge sentenced Redden to prison for a term of 12-30 months. A board granted Redden parole in 2022.

Redden, who appeared in court with his mother, has three felony convictions and nine misdemeanor convictions on his record, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained. Some of those cases were transferred to mental health court.

Las Vegas police: 2 arrested, 1 wanted in deadly homeless encampment shooting https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/las-vegas-police-to-provide-update-1-month-after-deadly-homeless-encampment-shooting/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 04:54:05 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711319 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - Two people have been arrested, and another suspect remains outstanding, after a deadly shooting at a Las Vegas homeless encampment.

It took place on Dec. 1, 2023, at East Charleston Boulevard and North Honolulu Street near U.S. 95 at an encampment where five unhoused people were living.

Police allege that Cristobal Omar Perez, 31, was the suspected gunman, and his girlfriend Kylee Au Young, 21, was another suspect in the shooting.

Two people were killed in the shooting and were identified by police as Timothy Brenton and Ashley Burrell. Three other unhoused people were also injured during the shooting.

Police told 8 News Now they believed the suspects had planned the shooting.

"What we know now is this was clearly a targeted planned attack on these specific unhoused individuals that were living there in that encampment," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson said at a news conference on Thursday night.

Before the shooting, Perez was allegedly dropped off in a neighborhood north of where the shooting occurred, according to police. He later waited for a black SUV to pick him up along Sandhill Road near Charleston. Once the SUV parked on Sandhill Road, Perez is accused of walking toward the homeless encampment where he immediately started shooting, police said.

After the shooting, Perez left the area and met up with Au Young who was waiting in another getaway vehicle for him. They were then dropped off and the two drove home to their residences in the northwest Las Vegas valley, police said.

Metro detectives continue to look for another suspect in the case and are working to identify that person, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson.

On Thursday night, police said they were still investigating a motive in the shooting.

"All signs indicate that there was some sort of dispute between a relative of Cristobal who lives in the area to the north of where this shooting took place and then as a result of this dispute this shooting occurred," Johansson said.

Both Perez and Au Young face murder and battery with a deadly weapon charges, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

Man who attacked Las Vegas judge skips court, could get bail https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/man-who-attacked-las-vegas-judge-skips-court-could-get-bail/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 19:27:01 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710705 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The man who attacked a judge in a Las Vegas courtroom on Wednesday refused to show up to court Thursday and remains in jail.

As the 8 News Now Investigators first reported, Deobra Redden, 30, a three-time felon, was in Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus' courtroom for sentencing on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. As Holthus was getting ready to sentence Redden to prison time, he lunged over the bench and attacked her.

On Thursday, Redden refused to show up for his initial appearance in the same building where the attack happened the day before.

The Clark County District Attorney's office requested Redden be held without bail. However, Pro-Tem Judge Lauren Diefenbach said that she was not comfortable arguing about bail without Redden present. Bail remained at $54,000.

In the state of Nevada, a defendant can work with a bail bond company to post 15% of the bail amount. In Redden's case, this would be $8,100. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson disagreed with Diefenbach's decision.

"I'm disappointed," Wolfson said. "We asked for a no-bail setting. We asked that he be detained because we believe that he is a danger to the community," Wolfson said. "The world has seen what happened yesterday and this person's behavior in court and I've almost seen nothing else like this, so we believe he is an extreme danger to the community."

On Wednesday, a court spokesperson said that security protocols would be reviewed.

Redden, who appeared in court with his mother, has three felony convictions and nine misdemeanor convictions on his record, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

Holthus was about to deny Redden’s probation request when Redden ran up to her, jumped over the bench, and attacked her, a video shared with the 8 News Now Investigators showed. Several other people then fought with Redden before throwing him to the ground.

A witness who was in the courtroom on Wednesday described the attack to 8 News Now Investigators one day later.

"It was just a total chaotic commotion," Daniel Martin expressed. "Honestly I was super surprised like I've never seen anything like that in my whole life, that looked like something out of the NFL or something like that."

Martin said he wanted to help the judge, but his public defender told him to stay back.

"I was in conflict cause as a natural man you want to protect a woman," Martin added.

Redden was booked into the Clark County jail on new charges of battery and battery on a protected person. One count of the battery-on-a-protected-person charge indicated the victim was “substantially harmed.”

A court spokesperson said Holthus’ injuries were “being monitored.” A marshal was taken to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson said.

Redden was due in court again on Jan. 9.

Las Vegas judge returns to work 1 day after courtroom attack https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/clark-county-chief-judge-provides-update-on-those-injured-during-las-vegas-courtroom-attack/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 00:45:42 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1710998 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - A Clark County District Court judge returned to work Thursday one day after a man attacked her in a video gone viral..

Judge Mary Kay Holthus was injured, received medical attention, and was released from medical assistance Wednesday afternoon, Chief Judge Jerry Wiese said Thursday. Wiese said Holthus remained sore and stiff.

Wiese briefed reporters Thursday afternoon about the attack that occurred at the Regional Justice Center on Jan. 3. He also spoke about the importance of added security in the courtroom.

Shane Brandon, a court marshal who was in the courtroom on Wednesday, was taken to the hospital and treated for a head injury and released. His injuries were still being treated on Thursday. A law clerk, identified as Michael Lasso, also received medical attention due to hand abrasions and was released by medical staff.

"We commend the heroic acts of Judge Holthus' staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant," Wiese said. The chief judge said Holthus thanked all the well-wishers and others who expressed concern for her and her staff.

"She is extremely grateful for those who took brave actions during the attack," Wiese added. "I want to make sure that the public is aware that the courthouse is a safe place to be, this was a very unique situation, and we are doing what we can to maintain the integrity of the court and the safety that we have here."

Several reporters asked Wiese what additional safety measures would be taken in the days following the courtroom attack. Crisis services have been arranged for those in need of assistance. Additional security personnel have been brought in to support courtroom coverage.

"We have notified Clark County management that there is a need for additional marshal positions in our high-risk calendars," Wiese added. "There's always a shortage of marshals, we think there could always be an increased security presence that would be better for the courthouse."

On Thursday, Redden refused to show up for his initial appearance in the same building where the attack happened the day before.

The Clark County District Attorney’s office requested Redden be held without bail. However, Pro-Tem Judge Lauren Diefenbach said she was uncomfortable arguing about bail without Redden present. Bail remained at $54,000.

Redden faces the following charges after the Jan. 3 courtroom attack.

  • Coercion w/force or threat of force
  • Extortion
  • Intimidate public officers/others, with the use of force
  • Disregard safety of person/property
  • Battery by prisoner, probationer, or parolee
  • Unlaw act excrete/fluid by prisoner in confined area
  • Battery on a protected person

He was due in court again on Jan. 8 and also on Jan. 9.

Raul Gil, 63, who told bookkeepers at Casa Don Juan restaurants to create false sales numbers that resulted in underreporting sales by $5.1 million from 2014 through 2018, was sentenced to 37 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

The IRS was cheated out of $1.6 million in taxes, according to a news release from the office of Jason M. Frierson, U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada.

U.S. District Judge Andrew P. Gordon ordered Gil to pay $2,228,943.65 in restitution.

After the sales records were falsified, Gil sent them to an outside tax return preparer who prepared his federal income tax returns.

Gil pleaded guilty to tax evasion in August of 2022. At the time, he faced a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

During interviews with the IRS, Gil falsely stated that the daily cash reports and point-of-sale records were accurate. He repeated the lie to IRS-Criminal Investigation special agents, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division, United States Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada, and IRS Criminal Investigations Phoenix Field Office Acting Special Agent in Charge Carissa Messick made the announcement.

The case was investigated by the IRS criminal investigations unit. Trial Attorney Thomas Flynn of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Lopez of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada prosecuted the case.

Lawsuit alleges CCSD, teacher’s union protect employees accused of sexual misconduct https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/lawsuit-alleges-ccsd-teachers-union-protect-employees-accused-of-sexual-misconduct/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 02:31:44 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711204 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A lawsuit accuses the Clark County School District and the teacher's union of protecting educators accused of sexual assault.

It was filed at Clark County District Court on Wednesday and outlines a pattern of CCSD employees getting moved to different schools following an accusation.

“Under the collective bargaining agreement, a teacher who does this, if they're not convicted of a crime, they can be transferred to a new school. There's going to be no documents or records about the abuse that occurred,” Dennis Prince of the Prince Law Group said.

Prince filed the lawsuit on behalf of his client who was assaulted by Darryl Lancaster.

A former teacher at Jo Mackey Magnet Elementary School, Lancaster was arrested in May of last year for sexual misconduct. In a criminal complaint, North Las Vegas police claim he groomed his victim.

According to a lawsuit, Lancaster was moved to eight different schools over a 20-year span.

Prince believes there may be other victims.

“The district needs to be extraordinarily diligent as well as at the school level of making sure that these abusers are removed. But under the collective bargaining agreement with the union, it's almost impossible to remove them,” Prince said.

In court filings, Prince cites portions of the 2021/2023 teacher contract where it states allegations of misconduct don't have to be in a teacher's record.

If an educator is convicted of a crime, they can have it removed from their personnel file after three years, according to the lawsuit.

Prince said he believes the same language exists in the new teacher contract.

“The new school administration, including the principal of the new school, would have no knowledge of what happened,” Prince said.

Prince points to a pattern of bad teacher behavior at CCSD. From 2005-2015 more than 30 district employees were arrested on sexual misconduct allegations, according to the lawsuit.

Court records show Lancaster was arrested in January of 2023 for misconduct at Jo Mackey.

Lancaster pleaded no contest on July 31 in a plea agreement, avoiding jail time.

“Clearly the school administration and principal of that school knew and was aware of this,” Prince said.

Prince added that Lancaster was allowed to remain in the classroom and the abuse of his client continued to go unchecked.

According to court records, Lancaster pleaded guilty on Nov. 27 to attempted lewdness with a child and distribution of visual representation depicting sexual misconduct. The former teacher was originally charged with multiple counts of lewdness with a child, producing child porn, and luring a minor.

CCSD declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing pending ligation. The teacher's union, CCEA, hasn’t responded to a request for a statement.

The hidden costs of owning electric cars https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/the-hidden-costs-of-owning-electric-cars/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 04:32:37 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1711265 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) - EV owners love their cars. But an 8 News Now Investigators' examination of insurance costs and other money associated with ownership of electric vehicles shows the bottom line might be a lot higher than consumers realize.

Take Craig Moe of California, for instance. Moe owns four Teslas and loves each one of them.

"I'm a fan," Moe said. "A huge fan."

Parking his silver electric sedan at the charging station at the Premium Outlets in downtown Las Vegas, Moe was heading to lunch while his car sat feeding on enough juice to get him through another four hundred miles or so. He says it takes a half hour or so to get a full charge and that's about all he needs to do to keep his Tesla purring.

"There's no maintenance," Moe said. "There's no oil changes, no fan belts, no filters, no smog, no exhausts. I mean you just drive them. It's like a glorified golf cart."

But like the ride in a golf cart, the finances that comprise owning an electric vehicle – some of them not easily ascertainable at first blush – can lead to bumpy terrain.

"The hidden costs with owning any EV would be that of insurance repairs and god forbid there's any damage," Carl Cook, owner of Cook Insurance Group in Las Vegas, said. "And in this town, you're going to have some damage."

The 8 News Now Investigators asked Cook to run some numbers on insurance costs in particular. Cook, then, ran the 2023 Tesla Model X against a handful of top-brand vehicles on the road today.

Cook, for a baseline comparison, assumed a policy would have $300k in liability insurance and uninsured motorist coverage as well as $500 deductibles for comprehensive and collision insurance.

The results: Tesla was over $1100 more than the second-priciest vehicle on the list. A year's worth of insurance (at last year's prices) will cost the Model X owner $7417, and a 2023 Ford Escape owner would pay $6346 for an annual policy.

But what's more staggering is a comparison between the Model X and two of the world's best-selling Sedans, the Toyota Camry and The Nissan Altima. Those vehicles would, under Cook's quotes, cost significantly less than the Model X, at $4,414 and $4,422, respectively.

What's more, Cook says, insurance companies might require new Tesla owners to acquire underwriting approval and wait through a two-week application process. In short, those companies are making it unduly difficult for a new EV owner to get their purchase or lease insured four-wheeler.

The digital insurance agency Insurify – which makes a commission on insurance policies bought through its website, acknowledges some hurdles in buying an electric vehicle. Namely, a report from Insurify details, auto dealers are not always prepared to stock their showrooms with EVs, that battery costs are exceedingly expensive, and the cars themselves are pricey.

Those items, though, do not seem to be deterring EV customers. Insurify reports over half of all car buyers are considering an electric vehicle, up from 38% in 2023. And the market for EVs is flourishing. Last year, 33 new EVs hit the U.S. retail market, according to the web insurer. In 2024, that number is expected to jump to 50 new or updated EVs.

You know the one, it's the video with the dynamic images of Las Vegas, quick transitions, and powerful music that sets the tone for the entire evening. How exactly does that come together?

The show open, as it's referred to, begins with a vision - now that vision might be somewhat loose at first but it's distinctly specific by the time the camera rolls. For Las Vegas Countdown to 2024 that vision was as clear as the horizon line from the Mohave on day one...it was time for a celebration. A celebration of 2024, a celebration of the coming Super Bowl, and a celebration of an incredible relationship between Nexstar Media Inc. Stations and the Las Vegas Raiders.

There's no limit to the ways a celebration can be symbolized, but in Las Vegas there is only one...and that's the iconic images and legendary Raiderettes. After all, if you're going to ring in a new year in the entertainment capital of the world it doesn't get much bigger than Football's Fabulous Females.

With the vision set and the choreography designed, the Las Vegas Raiders organization opened Allegiant Stadium to Nexstar Media and the entire Las Vegas Countdown to 2024 team to film this year's open for the nation's largest local broadcaster. Over the three hours of filming, 32 Raiderettes and co-host Michael Yo embodied all of what it is to truly celebrate teamwork and Las Vegas.

Raiderettes: 7 things you didn't know about the Vegas NYE special guests! https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/raiderettes-cheer-in-the-new-year-for-las-vegas-countdown-to-2024/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 22:15:55 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1706433 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The cheerleading squad for the Las Vegas Raiders, dubbed the Raiderettes, will be helping to count down to the end of 2023 during Las Vegas Countdown to 2024!

Here are some interesting facts on the cheer team that has set the standard across the industry:

  • The first Raiderette was national champion baton twirler Diane Shelton. After performing as a majorette with the Raiders band in the first-ever preseason game, Diane's father would refer to her as a Raiderette...and the name stuck.
  • Every year more than five hundred hopefuls try out for a spot on the squad but only 32 to 40 women score the touchdown title.
  • In 1978, Nexstar station, and KLAS sister station, KRON-TV aired a 30-minute documentary called The 1978 Raiderettes Football's Fabulous Females, a name they are now affectionately known by.
  • The first Junior Raiderette program debuted in 1998. The program offers kids 6-14 an opportunity to dance alongside the Raiderettes.
  • Always emphatic on being active in their community, the Raiderettes participate in Nevada reading week, visiting classrooms and reading books to children.
  • To wear the world renown silver and black uniform, the athletes must have professional dance skills, poise, plus a winning personality.
  • The Raiderettes Roster have included famous models, singers, actresses, and CEO's.

So what do you think? Do you have what it takes to be a Raiderette? Don't miss a special visit by the Raiderettes live on Las Vegas Countdown to 2024 on New Year's Eve

All country: Bri Bagwell to perform at Lone Star NYE https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/all-country-bri-bagwell-to-perform-at-lone-star-nye/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 16:42:51 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/all-country-bri-bagwell-to-perform-at-lone-star-nye/ DALLAS/LAS VEGAS (NEXSTAR) -- Bri Bagwell may not be a name you're familiar with…yet.

Bagwell has been a staple of the Texas country music scene for more than a decade. Watching her perform, you feel like she's one big song away from skyrocketing into superstardom. She rocked the crowd during a taping for Vegas NYE and Lone Star NYE in Dallas in early December.

Bagwell describes her style as "high energy country music" and notes she'll be performing original songs as part of Vegas NYE and Lone Star NYE on Sunday night.

After honing her craft as a kid in New Mexico, Bagwell found her voice and spot on stage as a student at the University of Texas. Bagwell released her debut album, "Banned from Santa Fe," in June 2011, sending her into the spotlight as the sole female artist on the Texas Music Chart for several weeks.

Her breakout single, "Banned from Santa Fe," and the popular track "Whiskey" (also the name of her rescue pup) made her a hit on social media. In the years that followed, she was named Texas Regional Radio Report Female Vocalist of the Year for five consecutive years from 2013 to 2017. Bagwell is also a noteworthy songwriter for Sony/ATV Publishing on Music Row in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Las Vegas Countdown to 2024” will feature performances by 98 Degrees, Bowling for Soup, the Texas rock band the Vandoliers, and Bri Bagwell; with appearances by Berlin, Chicago, Air Supply, Foghat, American Idol favorites Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, Pauly Shore, and Micky Dolenz.

Security, road closures outlined for New Year's Eve party on Las Vegas Strip https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/security-road-closures-outlined-for-new-years-eve-party-on-las-vegas-strip/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 00:43:51 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1705766 UPDATE: Metro police revised planned closure times on Las Vegas Boulevard. The road will close beginning at 6:30 p.m. from Spring Mountain Road to Tropicana Avenue. The Strip will be completely shut down to all vehicle traffic by 8 p.m. This story has been modified to reflect that change.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- More than 400,000 revelers are expected to ring in the new year between the Las Vegas Strip and downtown.

Switch will once again serve as command operations to make communication among all law enforcement seamless.

Metro Undersheriff Andy Walsh says help from the National Guard and the private sector will be used to make sure this event is a safe one.

"When we all think about recent events and the tragedy that occurred at UNLV, it's a reminder that it doesn't take a lot of sophistication or coordination or complex preparation to wreak havoc on our community. It's also a stark reminder for how important it is for us to be prepared as first responder community," Walsh said.

Among the restrictions:

  • Glass and metal containers, coolers, strollers and any bags larger than 12 x 12 x 6 inches are prohibited on the Strip and downtown, per county and city ordinances. This includes backpacks, purses and luggage. These restrictions begin at 6 p.m. New Year's Eve and end at 6 a.m. on New Year's Day.
  • I-15 off-ramps at Flamingo in both directions will be shut down at 5:30 p.m. Road closures
on Las Vegas Boulevard from Spring Mountain Road to Tropicana Avenue will begin at
6:30 p.m. The Strip will be completely shut down to all vehicle traffic by 8 p.m.
  • There will be a curfew in place prohibiting minors under 18 without a parent on the Strip
    and Downtown.

A resounding message from Commissioner Michael Naft: Don't drink and drive.

"There is absolutely no excuse to see what we have seen in this community recently over the Christmas holiday," Naft said. "In just 12 short hours, five fatalities, and four crashes. This community can not tolerate that. "

Las Vegas city leaders and medical personnel are urging the community to do its part, and designate a driver.

Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Touchstone adds, " I can personally attest to what Commissioner Naft spoke so much about. Be careful going home. That is where we do have the tragedies occur. I have been on many of those personally where some families, New Year's is completely destroyed due to selfish acts of an impaired driver. Certainly, we've experienced that recently with the loss of our two heroes in the highway patrol."

Helicopter to perform radiation checks on Las Vegas Strip prior to New Year's Eve celebration https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/helicopter-to-perform-radiation-check-on-las-vegas-strip-prior-to-new-years-eve-celebration/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 23:12:31 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1705061 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Low-altitude helicopter flights over the Las Vegas Strip are usually forbidden, but on Friday and Sunday, it's part of this year's prep work for New Year's Eve.

The public should not be alarmed by a helicopter flying a grid pattern as low as 150 feet off the ground, according to a National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) news release.

NNSA will be in the air to conduct radiation surveys to measure background radiation levels. That data will help security operations detect any spikes as New Year's Eve celebrations take place on the Strip. The surveys are conducted each year leading up to the Las Vegas event.

A twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter will conduct the flyovers during daylight hours on Friday, Dec. 29, and Sunday, Dec. 31. The flights will take about two hours to complete per area, according to the NNSA's news release. The helicopter will be flying at about 80 mph.

"These surveys are a normal part of security and emergency preparedness activities. NNSA is making the public aware of the upcoming flights so citizens who see the low-flying aircraft are not alarmed," according to NNSA, which is part of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Ruben and Clay set to bring a taste of 2003 to the new year https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/reuben-and-clay-set-to-bring-a-taste-of-2003-to-the-new-year/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 19:10:05 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1703935 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Two decades ago, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard were the stars of the second season of American Idol. Together, they became the faces of that season, and in 2024, the duo plans to continue working as a team to bring joy to those who come to their Twenty Years, One Night tour.

"I think the show that we are doing right now is [...] musically and artistically where Ruben and I enjoy being," Aiken said, adding that he could see the duo taking on a Vegas residency. "One day, whenever Ruben's ready to get off the road himself, [...] Ruben loves traveling. When Ruben's ready to get off the road and sit still, I'll talk him into doing it."

Studdard laughed in agreement at Aiken's assessment of their tour, which has dates scheduled into 2024 up and down the East Coast. Aiken says the show is very similar to the American Idol tour, the series of concerts that followed the second season of the Fox show.

"We sing songs that we did when we were on Idol," Aiken said. "We do medleys, sort of like we did when we were on Idol."

Both of the artists look back on their Idol days fondly, saying that neither of them could have predicted what the competition would lead to.

"We didn't know that this was going to turn into the rest of our lives," Aiken said.

Studdard calls Idol a "little summer camp experience," recalling the work that went into putting on the show.

"They were asking a lot of us, but now, when I look back on it, they weren't asking enough," Studdard said. "We really could have given them more for the amount of exposure that we were given."

Still, the performers love to bring their 2003 American Idol sensibilities into the 2020s, delighting fans who take in their shows.

"Here we are putting 2023 behind us and heading into 2024, but Ruben and I are still in 2003 with this show," Aiken said.

Chicago looks back, and forward to 2024 https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/chicago-looks-back-and-forward-to-2024/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 19:08:52 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1704015 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, and Robert Lamm, all founding members of the legendary band Chicago, expect the group's success to continue in 2024. Although a look forward usually elicits a look back.

"That's where we're from," said Pankow of the roots of the band's iconic name.

"Almost everybody was born and raised there," added Loughnane. He said introducing brass into the group's sound separated Chicago from its contemporaries.

"When we started writing, Robert would write songs — Jimmy would write songs that left room for brass to come in as a major voice, as important as the vocals," Loughnane said. "That's what initially set us apart and what still sets us apart today."

For many, Chicago is inseparable from the holiday season. Indeed, the band's Christmas efforts have been released together on an album entitled "Chicago: Greatest Christmas Hits." Those songs are available digitally and in a color vinyl package.

For their part, group members are ready to roar into 2024 with another residency planned for Las Vegas at The Venetian Resort. There, Loughnane said Chicago will take on their seventh set of shows in as many years.

"There's so much more from Chicago in 2024," said Pankow.

"Look out," Lamm added.

Performances are scheduled for the end of February and the beginning of March at The Venetian. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster. To preview the party Chicago brings to the stage, check out Las Vegas Countdown to 2024, a live New Year’s Eve special on Sunday, December 31, 2023, with coverage from 8:58 p.m. to 12:35 a.m. PT. 2023 left a mark on Las Vegas: Big positives and some intense growing pains https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/2023-left-a-mark-on-las-vegas-big-positives-and-some-intense-growing-pains/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 18:29:13 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1694670 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — If you haven't been to Las Vegas in a year or two, the changes will surprise you.

Some are impossible to miss -- Sphere, for starters -- and some are more subtle -- like more desert landscaping. Some have come quickly, but not without months of pain … welcome, F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Others have taken years to complete, like Fontainebleau Las Vegas a new gem on the north end of the Strip that stalled in 2009 before its Dec. 13 grand opening.

Some were overdue, like the marathon reconstruction of Charleston Boulevard, which will continue to the west in the coming year. Others seemed rushed, like the Interstate 15-Tropicana interchange with Super Bowl XVIII about to hit Allegiant Stadium.

Others brought joy. The Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Aces brought championships, with the iconic Stanley Cup on display and the Strip hosting parades in honor of the accomplishments. And some changes were resets, like the Raiders firing coach Josh McDaniels midseason and going with an interim coach who seemed to click with his players.

Don't blink or you'll miss it. The rapid-fire changes in 2023 continue to reshape the city, but none left a mark like the upheaval that came with the F1 race. Here's a look at some of the year's biggest changes:

LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX: What would Las Vegas do for $1.3 billion? Anything and everything, as the Strip turned into an enormous construction zone beginning in the spring and continuing still. The Nov. 18 nighttime race brought global attention and -- maybe -- made Las Vegas the new Monaco on the Formula One circuit. Time will tell. By the way, what about that $40 million for repaving costs?

THE PERFORMANCES: The biggest tours brought the brightest stars to Las Vegas in 2023 as Taylor Swift, Blackpink, Beyoncé, Pink and Ed Sheeran played Allegiant Stadium. Fans were delighted and singing along. Swiftees witnessed Allegiant's first-ever female headliner a few months before she and Travis Kelce became an item. Fans were crushed when Sheeran's first date was canceled due to technical problems, but he showed up at a wedding chapel and sang to newlyweds to help ease the pain -- and then rescheduled until he could perform when October rolled around.

SPHERE: It sprang to life for the Fourth of July and no one has been able to look away since. When Sphere finally opened on Sept. 29, U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere kicked off 40 performances, and the band continues to add dates into 2024 for one of the hottest tickets in town. Postcards from Earth launched director Darren Aronofsky's presence, with an experience that's a bit more affordable.

LAKE MEAD RISES: It's hard to overstate the importance of water to a growing community, and 2023 brought a recovery of sorts. Since 2002, the valley has increased in population by 750,000 people -- and it uses about 60% of the water it did back then. And according to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, more people are beginning to follow seasonal watering restrictions, a good sign for the future.

FONTAINEBLEAU: When construction was halted during the Great Recession (2009), the building became a symbol of the economic downturn. Now it's finished, and the public gets its first glimpse inside of the property that calls itself "the newest chapter in the 70-year history of the iconic Fontainebleau brand." It could signal a rebirth for the north end of the Strip.

DURANGO CASINO & RESORT: Southwest Las Vegas was already growing, but that turned into a boom when Station Casinos started building its latest hotel-casino. The much-anticipated debut on Dec. 5 is expected to have a second phase to build on its expected success, and then the company could be starting its next project.

UNION CONTRACTS: The Culinary Union and the big resort companies -- MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, Wynn Resorts -- worked up to the deadline to reach new contract agreements. A strike would have thrown the Strip into chaos as the F1 race approached. Unions capitalized on resorts' success, bringing significant raises to their members with a "share the wealth" message.

LAS VEGAS LOOP: New tunnels to the Encore and the Westgate were completed by The Boring Company over the past year. Maps emerged in July revealing proposed routes that would extend farther east, northwest and south than previously discussed. Routes are currently approved through the Strip corridor, extending north to downtown, west to Allegiant Stadium and The Orleans, and east to UNLV. A rendering also emerged showing a proposal for integration with the planned stadium for the A's on the current site of the Tropicana.

SYMPHONY PARK: Cranes in the downtown area are building the 32-story Cello Tower, a luxury condo project, and Las Vegas revealed a 441-room "dual-branded" hotel at Symphony Park in mid-November. It all adds to a downtown growth spurt coming out of the pandemic.

NFL AND SUPER BOWL LVIII: Football, yes, but Super Bowl LVIII is making an impact on the community in other ways as well. NFL programs and grants are reaching nonprofit groups, and preparation for the game is bringing work for many minority-owned businesses in the valley. All signs point to the Super Bowl coming to Las Vegas regularly, and the NFL is making its presence felt in the community.

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS: "Cup in six." It sounded like a dream, not a plan. But Golden Knights owner Bill Foley was prophetic, and when the team nearly pulled it off their first year in the NHL, there was no denying the possibility. Fans will never forget the 2023 team that brought the cup to Las Vegas, right alongside the 2017 team that helped heal the city with the mantra, "Vegas Strong." Original "misfit" Jonathan Marchessault won the Conn Smythe Trophy as 2023 NHL Playoff MVP.

LAS VEGAS ACES: A'ja Wilson led the Aces to the WNBA's first repeat championship in 21 years, defeating the New York Liberty in a matchup that seemed likely when the season began. Wilson might have had a little motivation after the league MVP award went to the Liberty's Breanna Stewart, but the team overcame the loss of starters Chelsea Gray and Kiah Stokes, winning the series in Game 4. And Wilson took the WNBA Finals MVP award. The champion Aces and Knights have been immortalized in murals along Main Street in the Arts District.

A'S MOVE APPROVED: Sensing a sports theme? It was a big year, and now baseball's in, too. The A's won approval from Major League Baseball owners on Nov. 16 to move to Las Vegas, and the team is expected to be in a new $1.5 billion stadium at Tropicana Avenue at the Strip for games in the 2028 season. There are still questions about the games in between as the A's lease at the Oakland Coliseum expires after the 2024 season. They could get an extension, play some games in Oracle Park in San Francisco, or play at the Triple-A Las Vegas Ballpark -- which is looking unlikely.

LAS VEGAS CITY OFFICES: The Civic Plaza site under construction at Main Street and Bonneville Avenue marks a major step to centralize city workers. Construction is coming along after the project began in 2022 at the site, which is adjacent to Las Vegas City Hall and Las Vegas Justice Court downtown.

WATER STREET: Henderson's historic downtown continues to emerge with a unique feel and great choices for diners. The area commands attention as a family-friendly urban center. Azzurra Cucina Italiana debuted early this year and BLVD Grille opened in July, two of the latest dining additions. Mojave Brewing Company and Lovelady Brewing Company are popular choices.

CENTENNIAL BOWL: For the drivers -- more than 100,000 daily -- who go through the interchange in the northwest valley, it's been a slog waiting for ramps to open and cones to disappear. But progress in 2023 brought big steps as the scheduled completion nears in early 2024. When it's done, it will include 20 total bridges over three decks, and will include a multiuse recreational trail with several miles of new bike lanes and sidewalks.

REDEVELOPMENT STEPS: Redevelopment plans for the sites of the former Texas Station and Fiesta Rancho properties moved forward. North Las Vegas has recruited Agora Realty -- the same company involved it its "NLV Village" project -- to rebuild the sites with a sports theme that will include involvement from the Golden Knights.

RAIDERS CHANGES: Josh McDaniels out, Jimmy Garoppolo on the bench, Antonio Pierce as the interim coach, and no clear future as the Raiders near the end of their fourth year in Las Vegas at the bottom of the AFC West division. Nowhere to go but up! New minority owner Tom Brady might not have a say in these decisions, but you've got to wonder if he's whispering to Mark Davis.

CANNABIS LOUNGE: The "Sky High Lounge" opened at NuWu Cannabis in July, breaking the barrier as the first Las Vegas pot lounge. Lounges under a limited number of licenses will follow soon, with openings planned at Thrive Cannabis Marketplace and Planet 13.

ROADWAY RENEWALS: The reality is this is happening every day all over the valley. But the Charleston Boulevard rebuild and the Boulder Highway projects show governments are trying to reimagine the possibilities for sorely needed transit.

PUNK ROCK MUSEUM: The 12,000-square-foot museum houses guitars, amps, handwritten lyrics, artwork, clothing and other artifacts from punk rockers through the history of the genre. The museum opened in April and even includes a wedding chapel. It's on Western Avenue just north of Wyoming Avenue.

ESCAPE IT: The "It"-themed escape room opened in March, and expanded with "Chapter Two" in the late summer. Creator Jason Egan (FrightDome, Escape Blair Witch, The Official SAW Escape) says it's by far the biggest escape room out there.

TROP-I-15 INTERCHANGE: Las Vegas has been battered into cone submission, and this project might have brought the worst yet. One of the busiest interchanges in the valley became a daily nightmare for "diverging diamond" commuters and tourists who unknowingly dropped into "Dropicana." We're in Phase 2 of a project that won't be over until 2025.

DIAMOND INN: A landmark near the Las Vegas sign closed in November, marking the end of a run that began in the 1940s. The Diamond Inn closed, and its beloved pink elephant no longer has a home.

GATEWAY PLATFORM: One of the curious changes that still has us scratching our heads, installed along Las Vegas Boulevard North near The STRAT. The platform is supposed to be a great place for Instagrammable shots in the area -- the Las Vegas Gateway Arches, the 50-foot-tall showgirls and The STRAT.

98 Degrees looks to heat up 2024 with first new single in a decade, NYE performance in Las Vegas https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/98-degrees-looks-to-heat-up-2024-with-first-new-single-in-a-decade-nye-performance-in-las-vegas/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 14:28:56 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1702367 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As the remaining days of 2023 fade away, Nick Lachey, Jeff Timmons, Justin Jeffre, and Drew Lachey, otherwise known as the band 98 Degrees, have much to look forward to in 2024, including the release of a brand new album, the group's first in years.

"Anytime you debut premiere new music, it's exciting," Nick Lachey said.

The song, written by Nick and performed by boy band legends 98 Degrees, will see its first televised live performance on Las Vegas Countdown to 2024 on New Year's Eve. The band's newest tune was originally a solo project for Nick. However, as the song developed, the singer realized it was more attuned to the band as a whole.

"I pitched it to [the band] because to me, both thematically and musically, it just felt like a 98 Degrees record," Lachey said.

And now it is. Got U will be the lead single for the band's newest effort, Full Circle, which is available for preorder on the group's website. The song will be 98 Degrees' first new single in a decade. It's one of many things the group has to look forward to as the clock ticks away to 2024.

"New Year's Eve is always an exciting time," said Justin Jeffre. "You think of a big party and just thinking about the future and sort of wrapping up the past year."

Band member Jeff Timmons said the group is trying to slow down and enjoy the ride.

"One of the things that we always repeat is how much fun we're having with all this stuff. I think back in the day, it was a blast. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it was a business and it was a grind and it was a lot of pressure," said Timmons. "But now, doing stuff like this — this many years later, we try to have a blast with it."

Performing in Las Vegas is a thrill for Drew Lachey, who said fans are always dressed up and ready to go in the entertainment capital of the world.

"[Las Vegas] has such a history and legacy of whether it's the Rat Pack or Elvis and these big New Year's concerts," said Drew. "People tend to be drinking, which is also something that we always joke — [...] the drunker you are, the better we sound. So, we encourage everyone to party it up."

When asked which Vegas icon each band member would have loved to perform with, each singer had a favorite. Timmons went with Vegas legend Frank Sinatra, while Nick Lachey named Dean Martin.

"Sammy Davis Jr.," said Drew. "He was [a] great showman." Jeffre concurred, citing Mister Show Business' musicianship and dancing ability.

The excitement of a New Year's Eve performance in Vegas will join the band's cavalcade of other New Year's Eve memories, including ringing in the millennium at Times Square in New York.

"Y2K, they didn't know what was going to happen," Timmons said. "They thought the whole world was going to get shut down. The computers are going to reset, but nothing happened."

Although nothing as dramatic as the Y2K phenomenon in 2000 is expected for 2024, expect 98 Degrees to heat Vegas for Las Vegas Countdown to 2024, a live New Year’s Eve special on Sunday, December 31, 2023, with coverage from 8:58 p.m. to 12:35 a.m. PT. Champagne to ring in 2024: Expert advice, trends and prices https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/champagne-to-ring-in-2024-expert-advice-trends-and-prices/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 19:00:13 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1700065 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Champagne may be the ultimate celebration wine and an enduring top choice for New Year's Eve, but a bottle of bubbly doesn't have to be a one-night love affair.

Jeff Eichelberger, senior wine manager at Wynn and Encore, sees champagne as a versatile drink to get the night started, to enjoy with friends at the bar or to explore for its complexity. He calls it the "little black dress of the wine world."

"You can celebrate the most glorious moments of your life, or your family's life, and champagne would fit right in," Eichelberger said. "You can really enjoy it in any setting, and people should." Champagne even goes great with potato chips, he said, adding that no one should be judged for how they choose to enjoy it.

Wynn Resorts, among the top names for luxury in Las Vegas, will sell plenty of champagne on New Year's Eve -- none more than Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut, the most popular variety with Wynn's customers. Eichelberger describes it as "medium-bodied, very pleasurable, very clean, refreshing, intricacy and layers."

Champagne is among the most difficult wines to make.

"It's the most challenging and probably the most intricate wine to produce because you have a couple of different fermentations involved in making just one wine," Eichelberger said.

"It takes several years generally to put a bottle on the table in front of you because the yeast needs that extra time to layer in complexity and delicacy or power, depending on the particular champagne," he said.

True champagne is from the Champagne region of France -- the rest is technically just sparkling wine. But even if you've only ever bought Cook's or Korbel from the corner drugstore, the message from an expert like Eichelberger is just encouragement to try something new. That's the only way to discover what you really enjoy.

That doesn't mean you need to pop for a magnum of Dom Pérignon.

Trends

Those big names of the champagne world -- Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Nicolas Feuillatte, Laurent-Perrier, Taittinger -- have inspired a new generation of winemakers who are turning some heads with new products.

Eichelberger describes the trend: "Maybe a small grower who used to sell his fruit to one of those larger champagne houses, but has decided that they really want to make their own wines."

He said more and more small houses are popping up -- especially in the last 15-20 years.

"While it's still champagne, I think you get a much different experience because it's somebody who literally has both the time, the energy and the focus to touch pretty much every bottle. And so you get a very unique, almost an artisinal experience from those wines. I think people are very interested in that," he said.

Other trends that might be evident this New Year's Eve include the growing popularity of rosé champagnes. Eichelberger said rosé varieties are full-bodied, richer -- and more powerful, which appeals to American consumers.

There's also a change in thought about the best glassware. Traditional flutes could be shifting toward something more along the lines of a traditional wine glass.

But there's one constant: drink it cold.

Always drink champagne cold, Eichelberger said. "As the wine warms up the carbonation is released quicker, and a lot of what you're paying for when you buy a wonderful bottle of champagne are those bubbles."

He said champagne is made with the idea it's going to be consumed cold. And it's safer to open a chilled bottle because there won't be as much force behind the cork.

Prices

The price of champagne is up 11% this year, according to Luxury Tribune. That's due mostly to inflation.

Champagne's place in the market -- firmly in the luxury category -- make it less sensitive to price variations because of constant demand.

Higher prices will naturally drive some consumers to sparkling wines including prosecco, an Italian sparkling wine. Sales of prosecco increased by 20% a year ago, according to an analysis published on Yahoo! Finance.

An average bottle of champagne from the big brands this year is around $50 to $60. Growers champagnes are averaging around $40. And prosecco comes in around a third of that -- about $13.

The sky-high prices you'll find on the internet are likely investment-grade vintage champagnes.

Newest Las Vegas resort to launch fireworks during NYE extravaganza https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/how-las-vegas-is-preparing-new-years-eve/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 02:25:12 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1700967 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The countdown is on as Las Vegas prepares for its biggest celebration of the year, and the entertainment capital of the world's newest resort will be participating.

The theme, "More in 2024," is said to represent the landmark events Las Vegas brought to the table in 2023 and the festivities yet to come. Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor's Authority, said the eight-minute show will feature a uniquely choreographed firework display.

"This year will be the biggest firework show we've ever had, it'll be the biggest firework show in the world," Hill said. "We're in the midst of the best time that Las Vegas has ever had."

Nine properties up and down the Strip will shoot off fireworks, including MGM Grand, Aria Resort, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, Treasure Island, the Venetian, Resorts World, The STRAT, and the newest addition, Fontainebleau, which opened in December.

Scott Cooper, director of business development for Fireworks by Grucci, said planning this year's performance started right after the smoke settled from the 2023 celebration.

"It's a delicate balance, so we want to make sure that we overcome that challenge," Cooper said. "Over 12,000 electrical circuits to initiate all those fireworks and pyrotechnics on those rooftops, it's a big undertaking."

The undertaking requires a partnership with Clark County, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials, and partnering resorts. Together the officials work to make sure every reveler has a fantastic time, and stays safe.

"When you have a party with 350,000-plus people, making sure everybody is safe and everybody has a great time is paramount for everyone involved," Hill said.

Your New Year's Eve buzz could cost you $4,100, and that's in 2021 dollars https://www.8newsnow.com/community/vegas-nye/your-new-years-eve-buzz-could-cost-you-4100-and-thats-in-2021-dollars/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 16:47:54 +0000 https://www.8newsnow.com/?p=1692248 LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- On New Year's Eve, nobody needs a reason to have another drink.

And they might not think about the reasons not to until it's too late.

You can't put a price on the lives lost -- an average of 28 people a day in a 10-year study of deaths from DUI crashes from 2009-2018. And the number went much higher during the pandemic, hitting almost 37 per day in 2021, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Stories about the victims and the families left to survive without them don't seem to be enough to interrupt that moment when a bad decision happens. But what if that one-drink-too-many costs $4,100?

Think about that. And it gets much worse.

A 2019 study calculated the minimum average cost of a DUI in every state at $3,294, and a 2021 update brought that figure up to $4,100. Increases in insurance rates drove that change, and think about what has happened to insurance rates since 2021.

There's a state-by-state breakdown that shows DUI costs in seven states at $5,000 or higher, with Alaska at $5,793. Mississippi is on the low end at $2,309, among the six states that were below $3,000.

But a 2023 report from Forbes Advisor takes the time to do a more practical analysis of the costs of a DUI.

A DUI could cost you $20,000 or more, according to the analysis. That's because it includes the cost of a lawyer and more realistic estimates on what things could cost post-pandemic.

While the difference in the surveys comes down to "minimum cost" vs. "what it could cost," there's a lot to think about in the details of both. In a matter of hours, you could go from thinking about that one drink (which could lead to another and another) to thinking about bail fees, attorney's fees, fines and court costs, probation and monitoring fees, DMV fees, towing/storage fees, bills for an ignition interlock device and higher car insurance for years to come.

Attorney Richard Harris breaks down the cost of a DUI in Nevada in information posted on the website The Defenders. The cost of a first-time DUI in Nevada is estimated at $10,000, according to the site.
